Gospel of John
Lesson 11: Jesus Teaches Us How To Live
LESSON OBJECTIVES
Goals
1. To provide students with an overview understanding of the Gospel of John
2. To expose students to how Jesus taught us to live
3. To inspire students to live as Jesus commanded
Topics
Body of Christ, Eternal Life, Following Jesus, Happiness
Scripture Memorization
John 16:33
OPENING PRAYER (5 to 10 minutes)
GROUP BUILDING (10 minutes)
Have everyone stand in a circle and hold hands. Place a soft object (ball, pillow, etc.) in the center of the circle. The goal of the game is to get other people to touch the object by moving around and pulling them toward it, but you must not let go of the person on either side of you. Players are eliminated when they touch the object.
The game continues until only one person is left.
GETTING STARTED (5 minutes)
We’re getting close to the end of our study of the Gospel of John. Only two weeks are left! Today we’re going to talk about how just before His death, Jesus instructed us on how to live.
General Discussion:
• If you made some “how to live” rules, what would your top 3 rules be and why? (Allow students to share and debate.)
• What do you think makes a good list of rules for living? (They are good for everyone, they make communities better, etc.)
Jesus’ list may or may not match ours, but He unpacks it starting in John 15. Let’s turn there.
DIGGING IN (30 minutes)
Assign one third of your group to read John 15.
Assign a second third of your group to read John 16.
Assign the final third of your group to read John 17.
Give your groups 5-10 minutes to read their assigned chapters. Tell them to pay particular attention to (and maybe even write down) instructions on living life according to Jesus that they read in their respective chapters.
After 5-10 minutes, bring the groups back together and ask each of the following questions to the groups about their designated chapter.
Discussion Questions:
1. Take a stab at summarizing your chapter. What did it say in general?
2. What are some of the things Jesus says in your chapter that provide instructions on how to live?
3. Are the things Jesus said commands, suggestions, or what?
4. Who does Jesus say we will have to help us according to your chapter?
Jesus talks at length in these chapters about love, faithfulness, unity, perseverance under persecution, and how the Holy Spirit empowers us. When you think of a Christian life, I don’t know what you think of, but Jesus really gives us an outline of how to live for Him.
Let’s explore how this might work in today’s world.
MAKING IT REAL (25 minutes)
1. Love One Another
Read John 15:12-17
Jesus shows us how we are to live by instructing us to love one another.
Discussion Questions:
1. How are we to love one another, per verse 12? (As Jesus loves us.)
2. How does Jesus love us? (By laying down His life for us.)
3. His command to love one another should look like what, then? (Sacrifice for each other, putting other’s needs first before our own, etc.)
Love is an action that requires a lot of purpose and stamina. It can drain us as we pour ourselves out into other people. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit enables us in this regard.
2. Stay Attached to Jesus
Read John 15:1-11
This is actually how these three chapters begin. This is actually the foundation for everything else when it comes to living like Jesus — abiding in Christ.
Discussion Questions:
1. Jesus identifies Himself as what? (A vine.)
2. What role does the Father play? (A vinedresser, gardener.)
3. What does Jesus say to us as a command? (We should remain attached to Him.)
4. How do you stay attached to Jesus in a practical way? (Be attached to His people, be attached to Him through spiritual disciplines.)
5. What does He promise will happen if we don’t remain and abide in Him? (We will wither.)
6. How do we see the fruit of Jesus in our lives manifest itself when we remain in Jesus? (We see the fruit of the Spirit, we see obedience, we see blessing, etc.)
Still, we cannot remain and abide in Jesus in our own power. That leads to a third and final practical way that Jesus shows us how to live.
3. Depend on the Holy Spirit
Read John 15:7-15
Discussion Questions:
1. The Spirit is a spirit of what? (Truth.)
2. What does the Spirit do? (Reveals the heart of mankind, glorifies Jesus, helps us.)
3. What does the Spirit do for us, per this passage? (Guides us.)
4. How do you think we live a life that is guided "by the Spirit"? (Depending on Him, not living selfishly, obeying God’s word, etc.)
5. Do you feel like you live “by the Spirt?” Why or why not? (Allow students to share.)
Remember that Jesus modeled these things for us. He loved deeply, remained connected to the Father, and depended upon the power of the Spirit. Before He died, He instructed His disciples to do the same. If you are a follower of Christ, He has shown you how to live — love one another, remain in Jesus, and depend on the Spirit.
CLOSING PRAYER (3 minutes)
Let’s pray we can love deeply, remain connected to the Father, and depend upon the power of the Spirit. (Ask a couple students to pray for your group.)
