SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Because Ruth and her mother Naomi were both widows, they must have been concerned about having enough food to eat. So Ruth, who was not only a widow, but also a foreigner, decided to go out and gather leftover grain from the fields. We just learned that God gave his people a rule that they must let poor people like Ruth gather from what is left after the harvest. Even so, it must have been embarrassing and perhaps dangerous for Ruth. Everyone would know she was a poor widow with no one to protect her. But as it turned out, she went to the fields of a very special man, who was also a relative of the family.

Ruth 2:1-23 (Ruth finds favor from Boaz)

Read this passage to the kids with feeling. If possible, use slightly different voices for the characters. .

Discussion Questions:

1. Where did Ruth go to gather leftover grain? (To a field belonging to Boaz.)

2. When Boaz arrived from Bethlehem, how did he greet the workers? (He said, "The Lord be with you.")

3. Where did Boaz tell Ruth she could gather grain? (Not to go to any other fields, but to stay in his.)

4. What else did Boaz do for Ruth? (He gave her some bread and roasted grain to eat, and told the farmers to leave extra grain for her to gather.)

5. How did Naomi react when Ruth came back with so much grain? (She was pleased.)

6. Do you think it was by chance that Ruth went to the fields belonging to Boaz? (No, It was God's provision.)

7. In what ways do you see God providing for your daily needs? (Allow for answers.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

God will take care of us. The Bible says He will supply all that we need. There are many ways He can do this. He provides seed for the birds, nectar for the bees, and manna for the Israelites when they wandered in the desert. But for Ruth and Naomi He provided Boaz. God knew Boaz would give Ruth and Naomi what they needed most: food and security.

Similarly, God may also want to use you to help others. How can you help someone today or this week? Perhaps you can be part of God’s plan by providing food for someone in need, by helping to clean up a mess, or by being a friend to someone who is lonely. God shows His love and kindness to you in many ways. Because you are valuable to Him and He finds favor in you, He wants you to show to others the same love and kindness He shows to you. Remember, everyone is valuable to Him, and you should treat everyone with Godly love and kindness.

NEXT WEEK

How do you know when you have found the right person to marry? Come back next week to see how Ruth and Boaz knew they were perfect for each other.
