SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)
Introduction:
As second in command, Joseph carried out the Will of God revealed to him through Pharaoh’s dreams. He gathered plenty of food during the seven good years so there would be plenty to eat during the seven years of famine. Then the famine came and devastated the lands near and far. Only the people in Egypt had food to eat. Before long, Joseph’s own family, including his brothers, grew hungry and weak. They heard there was plenty of food in Egypt, so they decided to make the long trip there from their home in Canaan. They had no idea Joseph was in charge. They did not even recognize their brother when they stood before him and humbly asked for some food. However, Joseph did recognize them. He also remembered how badly his brothers treated him when he was young. What do you think Joseph did?
Read Genesis 45:1-28 (Joseph forgives his brothers)
Discussion Questions:
1. After making himself known to his brothers, why do you think Joseph wept? (He had not seen his brothers for a long time and missed them.)
2. How did his brothers react when they first recognized Joseph? Why? (They were terrified. They may have though that Joseph was still alive, but certainly not the second in command of Egypt.)
3. According to Joseph, who sent him to Egypt? (God.)
4. Why did God send Joseph to Egypt? (God sent Joseph to Egypt ahead of his family to prepare a way to save their lives.)
5. What did Joseph want his brothers to do? (Go home, get the rest of his family, and bring them down to Egypt to live in Goshen.)
6. According to verse 14, how did Joseph show that he forgave his brothers? (He threw his arms around them, wept, and kissed all of his brothers.)
7. Why did Joseph want his family to move down to Egypt? (So they would be close by and so he could take care of them of during the famine.)
8. Similar to Joseph, who was sent ahead of us to forgive our sins, and save us from eternal death? (Jesus.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)
Joseph followed God's heart from a very young age. Although he found himself in some very difficult situations, he never stopped honoring and obeying God. As a result, God gave Joseph great power and responsibility. The people respected Joseph for his integrity. Like Joseph, we cannot always recognize God's purpose when we go through hardships and trials. However, it is a good idea to follow Joseph’s example. We can stand firm during these times, knowing that in Christ, we have a purpose. Jesus not only suffered some of the same things we do, He even gave up his life on the cross. He died so we could be forgiven and saved from the worst famine of all, eternal death. When we forgive, our heavenly Father forgives us.
