MEMORY WORK (10 minutes)

"As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” James 2:26 NIV

To help kids memorize the verse, assign actions to words as shown below. Have them say the verse very slowly while performing the actions. Repeat several times, until the kids can say it without help.

When saying this word                                                                        Perform this action

 body

Shake your body.

 spirit

Move the top of your body (starting at the waist) from side to side, like a snake would move.

 dead

Drop your heads and do not move for a second or two.

 faith

Put your hands first on your heart, then on your head, looking up at Heaven the entire time.

 deeds

Put your left palm out and hit it with your right fist, as if hammering a nail into the left hand.

 dead

Repeat the previous action for dead, or this time drop to the ground as if dead.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Before we read our Scripture verses, I want you guys to think about these questions. Is it enough for us to just believe in God? Is something else required of us? If so, what? (Allow time for the kids to discuss these questions before reading these passages.)

Read James 1:19-25 and James 2:14-26

Discussion Questions:(Ask these questions, mainly to get the kids to think about what Scripture says. Questions 1-4 are all leading up to question 5.)

1. Again, is it enough to just believe in God? (No, we need to be doers of the Word as well as hearers.)

2. Why does James ask if such faith can save us? (To show that if anyone has genuine faith, it will show in godly behaviors and actions towards others.)

3. How is that kind of belief in God different from what demons believe? (The demons believe God is who He says He is, but do not carry out His Will towards others.)

4. Have you heard that we are saved by grace alone? (Yes, see Ephesians 2:8-9.)

5. Do these two verses contradict each other? (No. When James challenges us to have deeds, he isn’t talking about what we need to do to be saved. He is talking about a different kind of ‘deed.’ Here James is talking about what our life should look like once we are Christians. The deeds he is talking about are similar to the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If we truly believe in God, our life will show it. People should see that you are a Christian by what you do.)

6. Why do Abraham and Rahab’s deeds justify them? (Because they believed enough to act.)

CLASS EXERCISE (10 minutes)

You Can Be a Doer (Skit) Click here

ALTERNATE CLASS EXERCISE (10 minutes)

Christians Who Don't Do Anything (Song) Click here

Lisa submitted an alternate version "Christians Who Will Do Anything" Click here

You can laminate both versions of the songs and make refrigerator magnets for the kids. This will remind the children to actively live out their faith every day.

APPLICATION (2 minutes)

Today we have been challenged to put deeds to what we believe. It’s not that our deeds save us, but they do show others what we claim to believe. Let’s become doers of the Word!

NEXT WEEK

What is harder than taming a lion? Come back next week to find out just how hard it is to become a “tongue tamer”! That’s right! A person who tames a tongue!
