MEMORY WORK (10 minutes)

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial, because having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." James 1:12 NIV

To help kids memorize the verse, assign an action to key words (Sign language can also be used!) Repeat several times, until the kids can say it without help.

Example of actions that can be used:

Blessed

Put fists on chest and open hands as arms are flung open wide.

One

Each child can (boy) pretend to raise their hat and nod their head, as in a greeting, or (girl) raise corners of invisible skirt and curtsy.

Persevere under trial

Act like something is pushing them down (slowly) until they are squatting.

Stood

Jump up quickly, acting like they’ve just pushed their load off them, and ending with  their hands on their hips, showing their muscles.

Receive

Hold an imaginary box in front of them and slowly bring it closer to their bodies.

Crown of Life

Pretend to take a ‘crown’ out from a box and put it on their heads.

Lord

With sharp movement, point to Heaven with both hands.

Those who love Him

Cross their hands over their chest (sign for love) and then with one hand gently point to Heaven again. This movement is less pronounced than that of "God."

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Explain to the kids that we have learned that we need to ‘persevere’, but ask them if they know what that big word means. Then ask them why we should persevere. The dictionary describes the word ‘persevere’ as, “to persist in or remain constant to a purpose, idea, or task in the face of obstacles or discouragement.” Basically, no matter what difficulties we face, we need to keep doing what we were doing, until we have accomplished our goal!

We can find out why we should learn to persevere form James 1:2-8 and verse 12. Let's read these verses now.

Read James 1:2-8 and verse 12

Discussion Questions:

1. What are the trials that James is talking about? (Problems, sickness, or anything we go through that tests our faith.)

2. When we experience those trials, we are supposed to consider it pure what? (Joy.)

3. Why should we consider them "joy?" Hint: verse 3 (Because it develops perseverance, which will one day make us mature and complete, not lacking anything.)

4. Verse 5 gives us a solution for a lack of wisdom. What is it? (Ask God.)

5. Why are we supposed to believe and not doubt that God will give us wisdom if we ask?

Hint: verses 6-8. (If we doubt, we are double-minded and unstable and will not get it.)

6. If we love God and if we stand firm and persevere under those trials, what will God give us? (Crown of life.)

7. What are the hardest trials you face today, that take a lot of perseverance? (Allow for answers from several students.)

In the next few weeks, the children will meet some fictional characters who are also learning lessons from the book of James and applying them to their lives in every day situations!

ALTERNATE CLASS EXERCISE (10 minutes)

Choose to Persevere (Activity) Click here

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

When we are faced with difficult times, should we give up or persevere? If we choose to persevere and pass the test and love God, you will become more mature. One day you will be complete and you will receive the crown of life that God promised! Remember these four things:

1. Love God, because when we love God, we are His children.

2. If we need wisdom to help us persevere, all we need to do is ask, and not doubt, and He will give it to us.

3. Facing trials happens every day, but we must persevere (and not turn from God) until the end.

4. Eternal Life is our reward, also known as the Crown of Life.

NEXT WEEK

Have you ever heard someone say, "Don't stare?" Next week we'll learn about when it is perfectly alright to stare.
