Introduction: It’s time for our Bible story for today. Anytime we read God’s Word, the Bible, we know that the story is true. Today we are going to look at some of the people who were part of the Christmas story. The Christmas story is all about the birth of Jesus Christ and it is one of the most important stories in the Bible. But, when we read from the Gospel of Matthew he tells us about a group of Magi, who are also called wise men. These wise men traveled from a very far off place to see Jesus. Ask a volunteer to read Matthew 2:1—12. Then, personally read the story aloud for a second time asking for the students to listen to details about the wise men and why they were so interested in seeing Jesus. Discussion Questions: 1. What is the name used for wise men in this passage, and where are they from? (Magi from the East) 2. How do the wise men know that Jesus, the Messiah, is coming? (They study God’s Word and knew about the prophecy.) 3. In verse 6, the prophecy states, “But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.” From reading this, what do you think a “prophecy” is? (A description of something to come in the future.) 4. How do you think the wise men had so much knowledge of prophecy and scriptures? (From studying the Bible and always trying to learn more.) 5. What do the wise men use to give them direction to find Jesus? (A star.) 6. What do the wise men do when they arrive at the house and finally see Jesus? (They bow down and worship Him.) 7. What gifts do they present to Jesus? (Gold, frankincense, and myrrh.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes) The wise men did everything they could to find Jesus even though it took them a while. They did not give up and when they found him; they praised Him and gave up special treasures that were worth a lot of money—fit for a king! Jesus deserves our praise, worship, and treasures. We can learn from the wise men that we need to remember to look for Jesus at Christmas. We can also try hard to remember to praise Him because that’s what Christmas is all about! Discussion Questions: 1. How can we honor Jesus at Christmas? (Answers will vary. Spend time reading the Christmas story from the Bible with our family. Go to church.) 2. Do you have any gifts or talents you could use or special ways you could worship Jesus this Christmas? (Answers will vary. We can offer our talents like singing or acting for our church play. We could give some of our Christmas money or allowance back to God at church in the offering, etc.).
