DISCOVERING JESUS LESSON 2: WE CAN KNOW JESUS
After completing this lesson, the children will learn that truly knowing Jesus means to have an intimate and trusting relationship with Him.
TOPICS Jesus, Knowing Jesus,Trust
AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes) Before class, write the following statement on the board: On your paper, list the first names of every family relative you can think of. After listing the names, put a check mark by each one you feel very comfortable being with. As the kids arrive, give them a sheet of paper and a pencil, and ask them to follow the instructions written on the board. This activity will be discussed with the kids after the prayer and memory work.

MEMORY WORK (12 minutes) "We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God." John 6:69 NIV This verse is not hard to learn, have the kids pair up to practice with each other for a few minutes.
SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes) Introduction: When you came in, you wrote names of family and other relatives on your sheet of paper. How many names did you write? Were you a little surprised at how many relatives you knew? Did you put check marks next to all of your relatives? Why or why not? (Allow some time to discuss their answers to these questions.) We may know a lot of people, but just because we know them, doesn’t mean we are comfortable being with them, like we are being around our parents or our grandparents. The difference is intimacy. Does anyone know what is meant by intimacy? Intimacy is being close to someone, knowing how much they care for you, knowing you can trust them, knowing who they really are. Intimacy takes time. Jesus desires for us to know Him in an intimate way. He wants to be our best friend. In our story today, He is talking with His disciples who by this time have been with Him for many weeks. They have seen His miracles, eaten with Him, been with Him night and day. Jesus and His disciples are much like a family, and they should know Him quite well.
Read John 14:1-14 Discussion Questions: 1. Where did Jesus say He was going? (To His Father's house to prepare a place for His disciples.) 2. Why is Jesus coming back after He goes to prepare a place for us? (To take us to be with Him.) 3. Who will we also know when we know Jesus and why? (God the Father because Jesus is God.) 4. When Phillip asked to see God, how did Jesus respond? (Anyone who has seen me has seen God.) 5. In verses 12 and 13, what else does Jesus promise to those who know Him and have faith in Him? (They will do even greater things.) 6. How does Jesus show us that He wants to be our best friend? (He offers us comfort, verses 1 and 2; He truly wants us to be with Him, verse 3; and He spends time with us, verse 9.)

ALTERNATE CLASS EXERCISE (10 to 15 minutes) I Know You (Activity) Click here If using this activity instead of "Path to Knowing Jesus," it is recommended you have the kids look up the following verses describing Jesus, as time permits.
Matthew 15:32 (He has compassion) Ephesians 4:32 (He is forgiving) John 14:21 (He loves us)Matthew 11:29 (He is humble and gentle) Hebrews 4:15 (He is without sin) 2 Peter 3:9 (He is patient)
APPLICATION (4 minutes) So how can we know Jesus? The disciples should have known Jesus very well, because they spent many weeks with Him, listening to His teachings, seeing His miracles first hand, witnessing His love and concern for them. And they did know Him fairly well, but only on the surface, like we may know a classmate or neighbor, not as a best friend or our parents. They didn't understand that He really was God. But Jesus offers Himself to us in many ways. His love, compassion, forgiveness, kindness and mercy are always available to us. He is always there for us. The more we let Him become a part of our life, the more we will get to know Him.
NEXT WEEK Why do you obey your parents? Is it because they will punish you if you don't? Possibly, but could there be another reason too? Perhaps because you want them to be pleased with you? Is love involved? Next week we will learn why we should obey Jesus.
