OPENING PRAYER AND PRAISE (5 minutes)

Further info? Click here

If you used a prayer book during the first lesson, allow the kids time to review the names they wrote in it, and to add names of any other friends they would like to invite to church. Mention these kids by name in your opening prayer.

MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

Matthew 10:2-4

Children will continue memorizing the twelve apostles. Today they can memorize Matthew 10:3. This verse contains the names of Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James (the son of Alphaeus) and Thaddaeus. Practice by reading the verses several times. Then have the kids write down only the names and practice saying them aloud in order. Explain to the kids that a special reward will be given next week to whoever can remember all of the twelve apostles.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

As we have been memorizing the names of the Apostles from Matthew 10: 2-4, have you noticed that they are named in pairs. Let's look. First there is Peter and his brother Andrew, then James and his brother John, then Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Thaddaeus, and finally Simon and Judas. Perhaps they were named two by two because Jesus sent them out two by two to preach to the lost sheep of Israel. It is sometimes scary to do things alone. It is much better with a friend, to help you, encourage you, and be there when times are difficult. Let's read about the special instructions Jesus gave to the apostles.

Matthew 10:2-16 and Luke 9:1-6

Allow a few kids to read these verses.

Discussion Questions:

1. Where were the apostles commanded to go and why? (To the Jewish people in Israel, because they were God's Chosen people.)

2. Why would Jesus call the Jews "The Lost sheep of Israel"? (Like lost sheep, they had gone astray because of sin.)

3. What provisions were the apostles to take with them on their mission? (Nothing except the clothes on their back.)

4. Where did the power and authority to drive out demons and cure sickness come from? (Jesus.)

5. What were the apostles supposed to do if a Jewish household did not welcome them? (Shake the dust off their sandals.)

6. Discuss how the apostles could be as shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves.

CLASS EXERCISE (15 minutes)

Breaking News (Skit) Click here

ALTERNATE CLASS EXERCISE (5 minutes)

Twelve Apostles (Song) Click here

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

Jesus commanded his apostles to go without any food, money or even extra clothing to the lost sheep of Israel. They were told to preach the Good News about the kingdom of Heaven, to heal the sick and to perform miracles. What a mighty task. But Jesus wanted to make sure they did not rely on their own power to carry out the mission. Jesus not only provided what they needed to live along the way, He also provided the power to perform miracles.

Does Jesus have a mission for you? He may not be asking you to do what the apostles did. But He is asking you to follow Him and obey His commands and His teachings. Sometimes even these may seem difficult, but Jesus will never ask you to do anything without giving you the power to do it.

NEXT WEEK

If you had to decide right now what you would like to do for a living when you grow up, could you? What one thing would you like to do more than anything else? Would you believe me if I said next week, Jesus will tell you what He wants you to do? Come back next week to find out what it is.
