THE TWELVE APOSTLES

LESSON 1: CALLED TO FOLLOW JESUS

After completing this lesson, the children will understand that Jesus is calling all of us to follow Him.

TOPICS

Apostles, Following Jesus

AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes)

As the kids arrive, give each one a pencil and paper. Have them make a list of people and things they follow, for example people could be mom, dad, or teacher, and things could be video game instructions, safety rules, etc. Review the list before the opening prayer, then ask the kids to share why it is important to follow some things.

OPENING PRAYER AND PRAISE (5 minutes)

Further info? Click here

For this lesson, you may want to have a small prayer book available where the kids can write down the first names of friends they know who do not go to church. As a class, you can offer a prayer for these kids to visit your church.

MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

Matthew 10:2-4

During this series the children will memorize the twelve apostles. Start today by memorizing Matthew 10:2. This verse contains the names of Simon (who is called Peter), his brother Andrew, James (son of Zebedee) and his brother John. Practice by reading the verses several times. Then have the kids write down only the names and practice saying them aloud in order. Explain to the kids that a special reward will be given in weeks to come to whoever can remember all of the twelve apostles.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Have you ever been playing a game or watching a program on television, and just as it was getting interesting, your mom called you? How did you react? Was that the right thing to do?

Has anyone here ever played “Follow the Leader"? Was it more fun to be the leader, or the follower?

What would you do if a stranger came up to you and said, follow me? Would you? Should you?

Well today we will be learning about several men who were busy doing their own thing, when Jesus called them to follow Him. They had never met Jesus before, although they had probably heard about Him. What do you think they did? Let’s read and find out.

Matthew 4:18-22, Mark 2:13-17, John 1:43-49

Read these passages to the children, but have the kids read the words of Christ. You may want to have a bible that has the words of Christ shown in RED.

Discussion Questions:

1. What did Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew do as a living? (Fishermen.)

2. What did Jesus mean when He said He would make them fishers of men? (Winning lost souls.)

3. Why did the Pharisees look down on Jesus for eating in the house of Matthew? (He was eating with sinners and other tax collectors.)

4. What did the apostles leave behind to follow Jesus? (Everything: jobs—even family.)

5. How long did the apostles wait before following Jesus? (They followed Him immediately.)

6. Why did Nathanael follow Jesus? (He believed Jesus was the Son of God.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

There are many times we are asked to follow. It may be to follow what others are doing, it may be to follow instructions that are given, and it may be to follow Jesus. We are fortunate indeed that we already know enough about Jesus to want to follow Him. But are you willing to give up everything and follow Jesus, like the apostles? Most likely, God is not calling us to leave our families or give back all of our toys, but we can still follow Jesus with all of our hearts. You see, our hearts oftentimes hold us back. Our hearts can hold on to bad attitudes like selfishness, greed, and pride. We are to leave these things behind, and instead fill our hearts with the love of Jesus. This is following Him. And from the apostles we can learn when we should begin following Jesus: Immediately!

NEXT WEEK

Has anyone here ever gone away for a vacation (holiday)? Where did you go? (Have the kids share with the class.) Now, try to remember, when you went on your trip, did your mom or dad pack anything? Like clothes, food, or camping equipment? How much fun would your trip had been if you had forgotten to bring those things? Well come back next week to see what such a trip might be like.
