MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Luke 11:9 NIV

To prepare, write 5-6 words on a single piece of paper until the verse is written. Then give volunteers a piece of paper and help them stand in order so the verse can be read by the rest of the class. After reading, exclaim, “Scramble!” and the volunteers will hustle to move into a different spot. Then the class will work together to once again put the words back in the right order and recite them together. For the next round, ask a volunteer to sit down before exclaiming, “Scramble!” Then the class will work together to put the verse back together with fewer words. Continue this process until there are no words left (and all of the volunteers are seated with the class) and the verses can be recited from memory.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:We have learned over the past several weeks that we should be respectful, have humble hearts, acknowledge God’s holiness, and believe He will answer us when we pray. In this last lesson on the Lord’s Prayer (Jesus’ example prayer for His disciples), we will learn why and how to ask God for the things we desire.

Read Luke 11:1-10, Romans 8:26-27 (Ask God and then receive.)

Discussion Questions:

1. How does Jesus teach the disciples to make requests to God? (He tells a story about a friend in need.)

2. What does the friend need? (Food.)

3. What answer does he receive? Why? (Yes! Because he asked.)

4. What are three things Jesus encourages us to do through prayer? (Ask, seek, knock.)

5. Who “helps us in our weakness?” (The Spirit.)

6. What happens when we don’t know what to pray for? (The Spirit intercedes, or steps in, for us.)

7. How is this possible? (Because He searches our hearts.)

8. So what does this teach us about prayer? (That simply opening our hearts to the Lord will lead to answered prayers and He will provide everything we need.)

Conclusion: It’s okay to feel like we don’t know what to ask for through prayer because the Spirit will help us. And we don’t have to be afraid to ask God for the desires of our hearts because He will answer according to His own holiness and will. The important thing to remember is that God loves us and wants us to make requests because it shows Him that we know He can provide. So, when we pray, we can make requests with the full assurance that God not only is able, but He will answer our prayers!

CLASS EXERCISE (15 minutes)

ALTERNATE CLASS EXERCISE (10 minutes)

Prayer Balloons (Activity) Click here

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

Tell a true story about a time when you prayed for something and God gave it to you. Then tell the class about another time when God’s answer was “no.” Remind the children that Jesus knew telling stories was a great way to help His followers remember the truth, and we can do the same thing to teach others about God! If there is time, allow volunteers to share their own stories of answered prayer requests and tell the class what it taught him or her about God.
