MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 NIV

Write the verse on a white board and read it out loud with the class. Then instruct the children to stand in a circle and pass around a bean bag while music plays (or a song is sung). When the music stops, the child holding the bean bag will recite the verse. Continue this activity until all the children have had a chance to say the verse. Lastly, erase the verse from the white board and challenge the children to recite the verse as a class from memory.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:We have been learning how to pray like Jesus and follow the example prayer (“The Lord’s Prayer”) He taught to the disciples. It’s important to be respectful, pray for the right reasons, and recognize God’s holiness. But how does belief affect our prayers? Today we will learn the importance of believing that God will answer our prayers and discuss some warnings the Bible gives us for unbelief.

Read Luke 11:1-4, Mark 11:22-25, James 1:5-8 (Believe God answers prayers.)

Discussion Questions:

1. What does Jesus ask for in His prayer? (For daily food/provisions, forgiveness, and help with temptation.)

2. Does God know we already need these things? (Yes.)

3. Then why does the Bible tell us to make requests to Him? (Because requests reflect a humble heart that acknowledges God’s power and ability to provide.)

4. What happens when we believe God will answer our prayers? (It will happen!)

5. If we truly believe God will answer our prayers, then what else must we do? (Be forgiving toward others.)

6. What happens if we doubt? (Then we become unstable and shouldn’t expect God to answer the way we desire.)

7. Does believing God will answer our prayers mean we will always get what we ask for? Why or why not? (No, because sometimes we ask for things that aren’t within His plan for us, even though we believe.)

8. Then why is belief important? (Because it readies our hearts to receive what God has for us and shows God that we know He can do anything!)

Conclusion: Believing God will answer our requests is a very important part of prayer! Truly believing God doesn’t mean we give up when He doesn’t answer our prayers the way we like – it means trusting that His plan is perfect. And because we know God is perfect and holy, our belief that He has the power to do anything shows Him that we love and trust Him.

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

Hold a stuffed animal and ask the children if they believe it will be able to fly. Then pray, asking God to make the stuffed animal fly through the air. When it is unsuccessful, ask the children to think about why God may answer “no” to some prayers even when we believe (because He has something better planned, His perfect will desires something different to happen, or He wants us to learn something new about Him). Ask the class to consider whether it is loving or unloving when God answers prayers (loving). Then help them understand that because God is indeed loving, we can trust His answers to our prayers even when they don’t make sense to us. And we can keep believing that He has a wonderful plan in store for us because He sent Jesus to die for our sins!
