MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

“He said to them, ‘When you pray, say, ‘Father, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come.” Luke 11:2 NIV

Use the follow motions to practice memorizing the verse:He said to them – Cup your hands around your mouthWhen you pray, say – Place your hands together in prayerFather, hallowed by your name – Point up to the sky with both handsYour kingdom come – Make a “come” motion with both handsRepeat the verse and motions as many times as necessary until the children have memorized the verse.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Who can tell me what “prayer” means (talking to God)? Did you know that Jesus told His disciples there are right ways and wrong ways to pray? Today we are beginning our lessons on the Lord’s Prayer, and we will learn what Jesus says about praying. While we may be used to certain types of prayers, we will find out if those prayers actually line up with God’s word.

Read Luke 11:1-4, Matthew 6:5-15 (Jesus teaches us to pray.)

Discussion Questions:

1. What does Jesus include in His prayer? (Acknowledges God’s holiness, asks for God’s kingdom to come and will be done, asks for food/daily needs, asks for forgiveness, asks for help with temptation.)

2. What stands out to you about Jesus’ prayer? (Short length, our prayers are/are not similar, His prayer is to the point, etc.)

3. What is a hypocrite? (Someone who says one thing but then does the opposite.)

4. How do hypocrites pray? (They stand where they are easily seen so they can gain the attention of others.)

5. How does Jesus say we should pray? (Humbly, only for God’s attention, to-the-point/no babbling, sincerely, etc.)

6. What role does forgiveness have in prayer? (We should ask God for forgiveness when we pray.)

7. Why should we also forgive others? (Because a humble, forgiving heart will be able to receive God’s forgiveness as well.)

Conclusion:

Prayer is how we talk to God. Jesus taught us to be humble and sincere when we pray and not to focus on gaining the attention of others (like the hypocrites). Jesus gave us the example of recognizing God’s holiness, asking Him to provide for us, and seeking forgiveness from God and others. And as we learn to pray, we will enjoy a growing relationship with the Lord!

Hold your hand up and assign a different part of the Lord’s Prayer for each finger: praise, requests, forgiveness, thankfulness, and help. If desired, you and the children may write each word on the tops of your fingers with a washable marker to remember Jesus’ example of prayer. Lastly, say a practice prayer for the class by using your fingers as a guide.
