You Can Be a Doer!

Amy learns that she cannot simply listen to the Word of God, she must also do what it says.(A skit for two: Amy and Patty.) by Andrea Wehmeyer

TOPICS:

Choices, Discipline, Faith, Listening, Obedience, Works

MATERIALS:

2 Puppets (optional), BibleSkit handout [PDF] Click here

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

(Scene opens with Amy and Patty meeting after Sunday school class.)

Amy:

(Catching up to Patty) Hey Patty!

Patty:

Amy! How are you doing?

Amy:

Well, actually, I was wondering if I could ask you a question… about class today!

Patty:

(laughing) I don’t know, can you?

Amy:

(rolling her eyes) Well, what do you think the teacher meant when she talked about that verse on listening and doing?

Patty:

Hmm. Do you mean the verse that says, “Do not merely listen to the Word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says,” That one?

Amy:

Yeah! That's the one.

Patty:

(holding up her Bible) Weeeell… When you read the Bible you have two choices on what you will do.

Amy:

What two choices?

Patty:

One choice is to read it and apply it to your life. When you do that, you actually do what the Bible is telling you to do. Or...

Amy:

Or what?! Not apply it to our lives?

Patty:

That’s right! After you read the Bible, you can forget what you read, ignore what God is trying to teach you through His Word and continue living your life, telling yourself that what the Bible says doesn't matter.

Amy:

Really? So, let me see if I understand this. If in Chapter 2 it talks about how we shouldn’t show favoritism by choosing someone else over another person. How do we apply that to our lives?

Patty:

Well, have you ever chosen to play with one friend over another because of what she has? Because she has more toys or better food? Because she smells nicer or is smarter?

Amy:

(hesitating) Well… sometimes.

Patty:

When James 1:22 says “Do what it says,” Amy, you need to do what that verse tells you to do. Don’t choose one girl over another because of what she has. For example, if Ali, who doesn’t have a lot of toys, invites you over to play, go play with her! Then if Mary, who has every toy you ever dreamed of, invites you to play with her, don’t leave Ali for Mary. You can play with both of them!

Amy:

Wow… that’s going to be hard, isn’t it?

Patty:

Yeah, but you can do it!

Amy:

(mischievous look) So…I have another question. When the Bible says that if someone hits you on your right cheek you should turn the other….(she looks at Patty and smiles)

Patty:

What?

Amy:

If I hit you on your cheek… (raises her hand to jokingly slap Patty)

Patty:

(runs off stage laughing)

Amy:

Hey! You’re supposed to turn the other cheek!

Patty:

(From offstage) You have to hit me first!

Amy:

(Smiles and runs after Patty)
