SIZE UP THE ARK
Children visit the great outdoors to visualize the size of Noah’s ark.
TOPICS:
Guidance, Noah, Obedience, Patience, Perseverance
MATERIALS:
Four volunteers Pencils and paper
DURATION:
Approximately 20 minutes
PREPARATION
Do this activity only if the weather is suitable and the church and a parent give permission. Ask for four volunteers who will stand at the four corners of an imaginary ark measured by the class. Your church ground will need to be at least 450 feet long and 75 feet wide to pace off the actual measurements of the ark. It would be helpful to take a walk of the church grounds on your own before class to know the best way to step-off the full size of the ark. Before taking the class outside, have the children find Genesis 6:15 in their Bibles. Have the kids jot down on a piece of paper the measurements God gave to Noah for the size of the ark. If your Bible uses cubits as a measurement, explain that one cubit equals 1½ feet. Have the children take this sheet of paper with them when they go outside.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
With the entire class, walk over to an appropriate starting point for one of the corners of the ark. Have one of the volunteers stand on this corner, while the class then walks 75 feet to the next corner. Another volunteer stands there and the remainder of the class walks 450 feet to the next corner and leaves another volunteer. Form a rectangle with one of the four volunteers at each corner. Now that the corners are marked, have some fun. Visit the middle: see how long it would take to run from one end to the other, see if the class standing at one corner can hear the person at the opposite corner, etc. Then bring the class back together and go over the discussion questions.
Discussion Questions: 1. After seeing the actual size of the ark, did it seem bigger or smaller than you thought? 2. How long do you think it would take a few people to build such a large boat? 3. Do you think Noah was able to fit all the animals in the ark? 4. If God asked you to build something as big as the ark, what would your reaction be? 5. What words could describe Noah as he built the ark? (Patient, faithful, persistent)
