COVER TO COVER

Children will enjoy an activity that demonstrates the importance of getting to know someone and the error with faultfinding. By Kristy Thornton TOPICS: Attitude, Behavior, Judging, Mercy, Reputation, Self-Worth

MATERIALS: Whiteboard, book, Construction paper, markers Printer paper, stapler

DURATION: Approximately 25 minutes

WHAT YOU WILL DO: Choose an age-appropriate book that you have read to show the class. The more worn and boring the better. You will have the class judge the book by its cover. After paraphrasing the book you brought to class, have the children make their own book.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY: We are going to learn how easy it is to have a fault-finding attitude towards others. I brought a book in from home that I have read. As I walk around the room, I would like all of you to look at the front and back cover of the book, making mental notes of what you see. (Display the book as you walk around the room.) Now I would like you to take turns telling me what you noticed about the book. (Write down all their observations on the whiteboard.) Discussion Questions: 1. Did you find the book appealing just by looking at its outside covers? 2. What makes you want to open the book or not open the book? 3. How would you describe the book to a friend? 4. What do you think the book is about? (After everyone has had a chance to answer some of the questions, tell them your favorite part of the book or what the book was about.) Now you all know a little more about the book. If the book could speak, how do you think it would feel about the things you said about it? (Allow for discussion.) I hope this activity helped you understand and draw some parallels to how quickly we judge other people. Often times, we look at their outward appearance, form an opinion, tell others what we think, all without really getting to know the person. Remember what Jesus said, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-2 (Hand out the craft materials.) All of us are going to make a book about ourselves. Each of you will receive a piece of construction paper that you will fold in half to form the front and back cover of your book. You will then add a title and draw a picture on the front cover. You will also get a few pieces of paper to staple inside your book. Use the paper to describe yourself. Let the reader know who you are, what your personality is like, and what your hobbies are. In addition, tell the reader about your favorite foods, colors, hobbies, etc.. If we have time at the end of the class, we can share our books with each other. This will also help us get to know one another better.
