Dirty Windows

Just as it is difficult to see through a dirty window, we cannot see God clearly through a life of sin.

Medium sized glass picture frameBlack washable markerPaper towels and water

DURATION:

Approximately 12 minutes

PREPARATION:

Remove picture and backing from the picture frame, so you can see through the glass like a small window. Tape if needed to hold glass onto the frame.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

You will cover the clear glass front and back with words until you can barely see through it. Then, you will let the children pass the window to each other and try looking at their friends through it. They will have a hard time. Then you will wipe the window squeaky clean, and pass it around again. This time they will have fun seeing each other clearly through the clean window.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

Let’s pretend this mirror is our life. God sees our lives, and nothing is hidden from Him. Whatever we think, whatever we do, whatever we say, He knows because He is God. However, for most of us, our life is not squeaky clean. Let me start with something that makes our life a little dirty.

(Write in large bold letters on the window the word HATE, and show the class.)

Okay, now what other bad things can we write on this window? (Let the class come up with more words, and write them on the window until it is completely covered.) There, I would say this person’s life is dirty, would you agree? Now, let’s pass this around, and as you get it, see how hard it is to see your friends through the glass. (After everyone has an opportunity, take the window and clean it as you continue talking.)

Now, let me clean up this window, so that it is squeaky clean. God knows the impurity of a man’s heart, and it saddens Him. This sin, all of this dirt, keeps us from God. Jesus came to earth to teach us how much God loves us, and how much God wants us to be with Him. If we admit that we are sinners, that we are not perfect and pure, and accept Jesus into our hearts, Jesus will clean us squeaky clean.

There, now, let’s pass this squeaky-clean window around, and see how easy it is to see your friends. When our life is squeaky clean because of Jesus, we will also be able to see God clearly.
