True Strength

An object talk to show how God protects us in unseen ways, to help us overcome life's difficulties.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

You will show how one child can easily prevent several other kids from pushing him or her up against a wall. Have a volunteer put his or her palms on the wall, lock his or her elbows and stand at an arms length from the wall. Then several other volunteers, one behind another, will stand behind the first volunteer, placing their palms flat on the shoulders of the one in front of them, with their elbows locked. At your signal, everyone will push forward with his or her body weight. The volunteer will easily be able to resist being pushed against the wall. This is because each child absorbs the force of the one directly behind them. You will compare this to how God protects us in ways unseen.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

I have a little trick to show how God protects us and gives us strength when we need it. I need one volunteer. Good, what I want you to do is stand in front of this wall, and place your palms on the wall, lock your elbows and stand at an arms length from the wall. Do you think that if I came behind you and pushed a little, you could keep me from pushing you flat against the wall? Let's try. (Be sure not to push too hard - remember you are an adult.) Now, what would happen if several of your classsmates got behind you, and all pushed forward using just their body weight? Could you resist the force? Unbelievably, you will be able to, just as easily as before. Are you willing to try? (If not, choose another volunteer.) See, it was remarkably easy.

(If time permits, allow others to volunteer to be the one against the wall.)

God knows we are going to be faced with many difficulties in life. Some of them require perseverance, some patience, and some a little extra strength. God provides what we need, even if we cannot see it. The strength to withstand all the people pushing at once is perhaps an example of God's unseen strength. True strength can only come from God. If we honor and obey Him, we do not have to worry, because He will always be there to protect us. The Bible says, "It is God who arms me with strength and makes my ways perfect." (Psalm 18: 32)
