No Leftovers

This Object talk shows how God provides for all people, wealthy or poor.

Approximately 7 minutes

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

You will begin this object talk by reading Deuteronomy 24:19-22, and then giving a short explanation as to the meaning of these verses. You will then have one volunteer cup both hands together as you pour a cup of birdseed into them. Use the large bowl or bucket to catch any seeds that spill over. Make sure plenty of seeds do spill over. You will then compare this to how during Old Testament times, poor people were permitted to gather any grain or produce that remained after the crops were harvested.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

Read Deuteronomy 24:19-22. "When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow. When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this."

God gave his people some very special rules, so that no one would go without food. Foreigners, orphans, widows and other poor people could gather leftovers from the fields. In fact, the rule said that the farmers could only go through the fields one time to pick the vegetable, fruits, or grain. Anything they missed had to be left for the poor. Let me give you an example. Let's pretend this is grain, and I am going to give one of you a cup of grain. (Have one volunteer cup his/her hands together over the bowl, and pour a half-liter or more of birdseed into their hands so that a large amount spills over.)

What you have in your hand is like what the farmers gathered the first time through the field. Look at all that was left over that fell into the bowl. This is like the grain in the field that was missed and left for the poor. There is a well-known story in the Bible about a widow named Ruth. Because she did not have a husband, nor owned land, she needed to gather leftover grain to eat. She was able to do this in the field of a very generous man named Boaz. Because everyone is special to God, He does not want to see anyone go hungry.
