应用

Marcus: | Hi, Lydia! Could you help me gather all of our friends around me? |

Lydia: | Sure…but why do you want everyone to come over here? What’s going on? |
|
|
Marcus: | Well, I am going to pray and I want everyone to know that I am good at praying. |
|
|
Lydia: | That doesn’t seem right to me, Marcus. |
|
|
Marcus: | What do you mean? What’s wrong with getting a little attention for doing something well? |
|
|
Lydia: | Because prayer is supposed to be between you and God… |
|
|
Marcus: | Well, I would like my prayer to be between me, God, and ten of my closest friends. (Speaking loudly to pray) OH, LORD! YOU ARE THE BEST. THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME SO AWESOME AND WONDERFUL AND… |

Lydia: | (Interrupting Marcus) Wait a minute, wait a minute! Are you serious?! Are you really going to pray like that? |
|
|
Marcus: | Well, sure! At least I’m thanking God. Isn’t that what’s important? |
|
|
Lydia: | Thanking God is important, but that’s not the only thing we should do when we pray. |
|
|
Marcus: | Oh, yeah? Well, what makes you an expert on prayer? |
|
|
Lydia: | I’m no expert, but I have learned from reading the Bible that we’re supposed to be serious about prayer and not be silly. Prayer is something special, and we honor God when we do it right. Even Jesus taught His disciples how to pray. |

|
Marcus: | Well, how did Jesus pray? I guess He would be the expert. |
|
|
Lydia: | Jesus was humble and sincere when He prayed. Jesus said we shouldn’t try to impress others when we pray, and we should look only to God when we pray. |
|
|
Marcus: | Oh…I didn’t realize that was in the Bible. I just figured that being good at prayer meant I should share my talent with others. I didn’t see it as showing off. |

|
Lydia: | Well, it’s good to know when we need help because then we can change. Would you like help learning how Jesus prayed? |
|
|
Marcus: | I sure would! |
|
|
Lydia: | Well, here’s what Luke 11:2-4 says: “He said to them, ‘When you pray, say, Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.” |

|
Marcus: | Wow, that is very different from how I was praying. I’m so glad you pointed it out to me, Lydia! |
|
|
Lydia: | No problem! That’s what friends are for. Would you still like me to gather all our friends? |
|
|
Marcus: | Nah. I’m going to pray how Jesus prayed instead. Thanks for being a good friend, Lydia. |
APPLICATION:
Prayer is a conversation between only us and God. While we certainly can pray together at home or at church, it’s important to remember that we shouldn’t try to impress anyone when we pray. Rather, we should think about everything God has done for us and talk to Him with respect. Now let’s all pray silently so we can practice what we’ve learned about prayer.
