Shape of Sin

An Object Talk to help children see how the only way to be purified of sin is through Jesus.

MATERIALS:

One wire clothes hanger

DURATION:

Approximately 5 minutes

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Children will describe different kinds of sin, and each time you will bend or twist a wire clothes hanger. After twisting the hanger, you will ask a volunteer to try to straighten the wire clothes hanger back into its original shape. It will be impossible. You will compare this to how it is also impossible for a man to purify or clean himself of sin. It takes Jesus. (Make sure adult supervision is present while a child is working with the wire clothes hanger. You may also want to put tape over any sharp edges.)

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

Everyone knows what I have here. Yes, it is a clothes hanger. An old fashion kind, made from wire. It looks nice now, but what if it were full of sin? Let’s see. Would someone describe a sin to me? (Each time a volunteer offers a description of sin, bend or twist the clothes hanger. Repeat until it is really bent up. Then ask a volunteer to come forward.)

What I would like you to do is to try to put this hanger back in its original shape using only your hands. (Allow the child to try for a minute or so as you talk further.) As our volunteer is working on the hanger, think about people. Just like that clothes hanger, people are full of sin. The Bible says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom 3:23) Sometimes people try hard to purify themselves of all their sin by doing good things, or attending all kinds of church functions. Not that doing those things are bad, on the contrary they are great! However, doing good things does not clean away the sin. Let’s see how well our volunteer is doing with the clothes hanger. Still looks a little bent up. The fact is this clothes hanger is impossible to fix using only hands. It can never be the same. It would take a machine or some tools to return it to its original condition. Likewise, people cannot fix themselves either. They cannot purify or clean themselves of their own sin. It takes the blood of Jesus. The Bible says, “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son purifies us from all sin.” (1John 1:7)
