MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

"Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them." Luke 1:68 NIV

Read this verse together several times, then write the verse on the board. Say the verse together as a class, then erase a word and say the verse again. Continue erasing words and saying the verse until the entire verse can be said without any words showing on the board.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction:

Last week we learned how Ruth went to Boaz on the threshing floor presenting herself as his possible wife. Boaz was obviously pleased that Ruth wanted him as a husband. He was a close relative to Ruth, a kinsman-redeemer according to the Levitical law. He truly wanted Ruth to be his wife and to provide for her and her mother-in-law. But there was someone else who had the legal right to take Ruth as a bride, another closer kinsman-redeemer. Boaz couldn't sleep until he took care of this matter. What could he do? What if the other man wanted Ruth for his own? Our story today begins with Boaz at the city gates with a plan make his marriage to Ruth official once and for all.

Before we read our story, there are a few passages we must look up to help us understand what is going on.

Leviticus 25:25

“If one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells some of his property, his nearest relative is to come and redeem what his countryman has sold."

This verse tells us that if a man became poor and sold some of his property, a close relative could redeem (buy back) the property to return it to the family. This person was known as a kinsman-redeemer. Naomi decided to sell the property once owned by her husband. She needed the money, but she also knew it could be redeemed. She hoped Boaz would redeem it.

Leviticus 25:48-49a

"…they retain the right of redemption after they have sold themselves. One of their relatives may redeem them: An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them."

These verses tell us that not only was a man’s property redeemable, but so was a person who had been given to someone else, such as in slavery. The person could be redeemed, or bought back by a kinsman-redeemer. As we read the story together, listen for the words: redeem, redeemer, and kinsman-redeemer.

Ruth 4:1-17 (Boaz and Ruth are married)

Read this passage to the kids with feeling. If possible, use slightly different voices for the characters. To add interest, bring a sandal to use as a prop during the reading.

Discussion Questions:

1. Why did Boaz want to have 10 of the elders with him at the city gate? (To act as witnesses.)

2. How do you think Boaz felt when the other man first said, "I will redeem it"? (Perhaps disappointed.)

3. If the man wanted to redeem the land, what else would he need to redeem? (Ruth.)

4. What excuse did the other relative give for not redeeming the land and Ruth? (He said it would endanger his own estate. He didn't want to risk giving his wealth to the family of Naomi's husband Elimelech.)

5. What did the other relative do to show he was giving Boaz the right to redeem? (He took off his sandal.)

6. How were Boaz, Ruth and Naomi blessed by the marriage? (See verses 11, 12 and 15 - they would build up the house of Israel, have good standing in Ephrathah, be famous in Bethlehem, have a family like that of Perez, Naomi would have renewed life and be sustained in her old age.)

7. How is what Jesus did for us on the cross like what Boaz did for Ruth? (Jesus redeemed us by paying the price for our sins.)

APPLICATION (2 minutes)

God had a wonderful plan for Ruth. It involved a kinsman-redeemer named Boaz. Because he loved her and he was an honorable man, he paid the price to set Ruth free from a life of poverty. This beautiful story shows us a lot about our own relationship with God. God truly loves us. But we are all sinners. Because of this sin, we cannot have a true relationship with God. The price for our sin is death. But God sent his Son to pay the price for our sin. He died for us on the cross so we could live. Jesus is our Redeemer.
