SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Introduction: After the Passover feast, Jesus went up to the Mount of Olives to pray. He took three of His disciples with Him, Peter, James and John, because He was greatly troubled. Jesus fell to the ground and prayed "Abba Father, he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." (Mark 14:36) Jesus knew what was about to happen. He knew also that He must see it through. After Jesus was finished praying, He called to his disciples who had fallen asleep, "Rise! Let's go! Here comes my betrayer." (Mark 14:42)

Read Mark 14:43-51; 15:1-15, 22-37

Discussion Questions:

1. Who betrayed Jesus, and how did he do it? (Judas, with a kiss)

2. The chief priests handed Jesus over to whom? (Pilate)

3. When asked if He was the king of the Jews, how did Jesus reply? (He said, "Yes, it is as you say" That was why a sign was placed over Jesus' head on the cross that said "king of the Jews".)

4. When Pilate asked the people if they wanted him to release Jesus, what did they say? (Crucify him)

5. What is meant by Crucifixion? (It is when a person is nailed or tied to a wooden cross. During Jesus' time, this was a form of punishment for criminals such as robbers.)

6. What is significant about the death of Jesus to the Christian believer? (Because God loved us so much, He sent His son Jesus to die for our sins. Even with the horrible and painful way Jesus died, His arms were stretched out to invite us, to embrace us. Where sin had separated us from God, Jesus' death became a bridge back to God.)

7. How did people treat Jesus while he was on the cross? (He was insulted and mocked)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

Before He gave up his life, Jesus cried in a loud voice, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" It was then that all the sin of the world was laid upon Jesus. The sky was dark during this time because God took His light away from the world. The light of God and the darkness of sin cannot be together. Then Jesus cried one more time, and gave up His soul. The Lamb of God had been sacrificed. The Bible says, "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) We must be very special to God. He allowed His only son to die, so that we may live.

NEXT WEEK

The story doesn't end here. Jesus was taken down from the cross, and put into a tomb. However on Sunday morning, the body of Jesus was missing. Simply vanished! But where? Next week we will find out.
