LESSON 5: THE WISE AND FOOLISH BUILDERS

This lesson will teach the children the importance of having Jesus and the Bible as their foundation in all that they do. The children will also learn what happens to lives not built on the rock of Jesus when storms come. by Kristy Thornton

TOPICS Following Jesus, Foolishness, Parables, Wisdom

AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes) Place a box full of sticks, grass blades, cards, and blocks in the middle of the table. Have the children build their own house using only the materials in the box. When everyone has finished, discuss with the class the sturdiness of each house. Ask each child, “If a storm came, what do you think will happen to your house?” Optional: After the discussion shake the desk or use a floor fan to illustrate a storm. Let’s see whose house is super strong. Fan each house for 3 seconds. Discuss what happened to the houses and why.

BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes) "He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock." Luke 6:48 NIV Read the memory verse to the children. When reading it a second time, explain to them that you will divide the class in groups of four. Each group will have to act out their part of the verse. Everyone will repeat the reference (Luke 6:48) together. Part #1 - He is like a man building a house (Have the children pretend to build a house.) Part #2 - who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock (Have children pretend to dig and lay a solid foundation.) Part #3 - When a flood came, the torrent struck that house (Have children pretend to be a flood about to hit a house.) Part #4 - but could not shake it, because it was well built. (Have children stay perfectly still, pretending to be strong.)

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes) Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the parable of the Wise and Foolish Builder right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand.. Introduction: Jesus loved teaching people ways to live wisely by using parables. We are going to learn about a parable that every believer, young or old, needs to understand and practice daily in his or her walk with Christ. Read Matthew 7:24-27 (The Wise and Foolish Builder) Discussion Questions: 1. What does Jesus want us to hear? (His Words.) 2. What does Jesus want us to put in practice and start doing? (His Words.) 3. Will a person who hears and puts Jesus’ words in practice be wise or foolish? (Wise.) 4. What is the wise builder supposed to build his or her house on? (The rock.) 5. What is the rock? (Jesus, His words, and the Bible.) 6. What does a foolish person build his or her house on? (Sand.) 7. When the storm came, which house did not crumble and fall? (The house built on the rock.) 8. How can you start building your life on the rock (Jesus)? (Reading the Bible, praying, going to church and Sunday school.)
