JOSHUA LESSON 2: RAHAB AND THE SPIES

In this lesson, the children learn about Rahab, a woman of faith who helped protect the spies sent by Joshua to look over the Promised Land.

BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes) "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:18 NIV Read the verse to the children and explain that our actions speak louder than mere words. Repeat the verse to the children several times.

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes) Gather the children around you in a circle for story time. After the introduction, read the story about Joshua right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand. Introduction: Today, we will learn about a woman named Rahab and find out how she helped the spies that Joshua sent to look over the land. Read Joshua 2:1-24 (Rahab and the Spies) Discussion Questions: 1. How many men did Joshua send to spy out the Promised Land? (Two.) 2. What was the name of the woman who helped Joshua's men? (Rahab.) 3. Why did Rahab help Joshua's men? (Rahab knew that God was helping the Israelites and that He was going to give them the land.) 4. How did Rahab help the spies? (She hid the spies from the king's men and also helped them escape.) 5. Where did Rahab hide the spies? (On the roof, under stalks of flax.) 6. What did Rahab ask in return for helping the spies escape? (Protection for herself and for her family.) 7. What did Rahab hang from the window to let God's people know which house was hers? (A red thread or cord.)

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes) Further info? Click here Today's snack will be red rope licorice. As the kids enjoy the snack, talk about what it may have been like for Rahab to help the spies escape.

CLOSING ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes) Red Ribbon Hide & Seek (Game) Have the children close their eyes while you hide a red ribbon somewhere in the room. On the count of three the children open their eyes and begin searching for the red ribbon. The child that finds the ribbon will be the one to hide it during the next round of hide & seek. (You may want to set some guidelines on areas that are off limits such as storage areas or filing cabinets.)
