SPECIAL OCCASIONS

LESSON 4: FATHER'S DAY - RIGHT AWAY, ALL THE WAY

In this lesson, the children will learn about the importance of honoring their word and obediently doing what they say they will do even when they do not feel like it.by Lauren Shelnutt

BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes)

"If you love me, keep my commands." John 14:15 NIV

Read the verse several times to the children. Read it again pausing on the words "love" and "commands" allowing the children to fill in the blanks.

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Introduction:

It’s time for our Bible story for today. Anytime we read the Bible we can remember that it’s God’s Holy Word. Sometimes, Jesus used special stories in the Bible to teach people a lesson. God wants us to listen, read and learn from these stories to become more like Him. When we listen to directions and follow God’s teaching, that’s called obedience. Not only do we need to listen and read what the Bible has to say, but also we need to do what He teaches us to do.

Read Matthew 21:28-32.  (Jesus Tells the Parable of the Two Sons)

Discussion Questions:

1. What does the father in the story need? (Someone to help him.)

2. What does the first son say when his father asks him to work? (No.)

3. Does the first son change his mind? (Yes, he starts to help after saying he wouldn't.)

4. What does the second son say when the father asks him to work? (He says, “yes sir!”)

5. Does the second son help as he said he would? (No.)

Conclusion: How does Jesus want us to respond when our parents ask us to do something? He wants us to obediently follow directions right away, all the way and with a happy heart. We need to show obedience to our parents because Jesus teaches us in this story that we can’t just say we are going to obey we have to follow through with actions and do it. That’s a great Father’s Day present—showing your mom and dad what it looks like to obey right away, all the way and with a happy heart!

ALTERNATE FUN TIME (5 minutes)

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Further info? Click here

Start with prayer and thank God for each of the children's fathers, grandfathers, or other male role models. As the children enjoy their snack, ask them to share ways in which these men care for them.

CLOSING ACTIVITY (10 minutes)

Say, "The sons in Jesus’ story told their dad that they would or wouldn’t help, but then both of them did the opposite of their words. Today, we learned that what we say matters."

Have the children act out motions for today’s main teaching point:

RIGHT AWAY - Demonstrate running in place.

ALL THE WAY - Demonstrate the motion of squatting and touching the floor and then jumping up to raise your hands all the way to the sky.

WITH A HAPPY HEART - Demonstrate a big smile and place your right hand over you heart.

Practice the prompts above until children have them memorized. For added fun, do the words and actions at different speeds and volumes.

Say, "Through this story, Jesus taught that our actions speak louder than words. Jesus wants us to obey, right away, all the way, and with a happy heart! Let’s work hard this week to make sure that we obey our parents, right away, all the way, and with a happy heart! That would be the best Father’s Day gift you could give your dad all year long!
