BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes)
"Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her." Proverbs 31:28 NIV
Have the children do the following motions with you as the class reads today's verse together aloud.
When the class says, “arise” have them jump up high and throw their arms up in the air.
When the class says, “blessed” have them give a big thumbs up.
When the class says, "praise her” have them clap loudly.
Read the verse 5 times together as a class. Modeling the motions for the kids and encouraging them to participate. Then, just do the motions and see if the kids can recite the words of the verse on their own.
BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)
Introduction:
It’s time for our Bible story and because this story is from God's Word, we know that it is a true story. God wants us to listen, read and learn from these stories to become more like Him. When we listen to directions and follow what God says, it is called obedience. Today we are going to hear about a mother in the Bible who gave up everything she had for God. Because she obeyed God, she was able to take care of her sons and have everything she needed and more! [Pick up the vegetable oil.] During Biblical times people needed olive oil to make almost everything they ate. They also used oil in lamps to ptovide light; this was many years before light bulbs were invented. So, it was important to always have lots of oil in the house.
Read 2 Kings 4:1-7.
Discussion Questions:
1. What was going to happen to the widow's sons because she owed someone money? (They would be taken as slaves.)
2. What is the name of God's servant who helped the widow? (Elisha.)
3. What is the only thing the widow has in her home? (A small jar of olive oil.)
4. What does Elisha tell the woman and her sons to collect? (Empty jars from their neighbors.)
5. How does the widow fill all the empty jars with just a little bit of oil? (God performs a miracle! We can’t explain why the oil didn’t run out.)
6. What is Elisha’s advise to the widow concerning the new jars of olive oil? (He suggests that she sell them to raise money to pay her debts.)
