THE LIFE OF MOSES

LESSON 5: THE TWELVE SPIES

This lesson will help young children understand that they can trust God to be there, even when life gets scary. God is able to help us no matter how big our problems may seem to be.

TOPICS

Courage, Protection, Provision, Trust

AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes)

As kids arrive have them work on the coloring page "Don't Worry, God Reigns!" Before starting class, ask if any of the children would like to share their pictures with the rest of the class.

WORSHIP TIME (5 minutes)

BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes)

"In God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?" Psalm 56:11 NIV

Explain to the children that our strength comes from God above. We don't have to be afraid. We can trust that God will help us when we call on Him.

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Gather the children around you for story time. After the introduction, read the Children's version of the story. As an option, you can read the story directly from the Bible.

Introduction:

At times, people have a hard time believing that God can provide the help they need. People mistakenly think that their problems are too big for God. It is important for all of us to learn as much about God as we can. When we know more about God, we will understand that God is big enough to help us get through anything. Our Bible story today is from the book of Exodus found in the Old Testament. It is an example of two men who trusted God but many others who did not. (Instead of reading the below children's version of the story, you can read directly from the Bible.)

(Option) Read Numbers 13-14 (Exploring Canaan)

Discussion Questions:

1. How many men were sent to explore the Promised Land? (12)

2. What types of things were the 12 men looking for? (What kind of land it was, What kind of towns & people lived there.)

3. How long were the men gone? (40 days.)

4. What did the men bring back with them? (Grapes, pomegranates and figs.)

5. What kind of people lived in the land? (Giants.)

6. Did the people trust that God would give them the land? (No.)

7. What happened to the people because they would not believe God? (God let them wander in the desert for 40 years.)

8. Why is it best to trust God in all things? (Allow for discussion.)

FUN TIME (7 minutes)

ALTERNATE FUN TIME (8 minutes)

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Further info? Click here

Start with prayer, thanking God for all the good things He provides for us. God provides for us both spiritually and physically. Have a snack of fresh, seedless grapes.

CLOSING ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes)

As the kids wait to be picked up, play the guessing game "I Spy with My Little Eye."

The leader starts by choosing an object in the room and says, "I spy with my little eye, something that is green or something beginning with the letter 'K'." (The options for possible clues are endless.) The children look around and suggest things it might be. If no one guesses correctly, the leader can give another clue about the object he or she has selected. The person who guesses correctly gets to be the leader in the next game.
