THE LIFE OF MOSES
LESSON 4: TEN RULES TO LIVE BY
In this lesson, the children will learn that God gave us ten commandments, or rules, to live by. By following these rules, our lives will be pleasing to God.
TOPICS
Commandments, Moses, Obedience, Pleasing God
AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes)
As kids arrive have them play a classic game of "Red Light/Green Light." If you don't remember how the game works or have never played the game, here are some quick directions:
• Children line up in a horizontal line facing you.
• You will stand at the opposite side of the room and call out "Green Light" or "Red Light."
• When you say green light the children move towards you, when you call red light they must stop.
• The first child to reach you wins.
• A child must go back to the starting line if they continue to move forward once you've called red light. After the game and before class begins, ask the children if the game would have been as fun if there were no rules. Discuss why rules make the game more fun. Explain that it is much the same in real life, rules and laws make life much better.

BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes)
"Obey the Lord your God and follow his commands." Deuteronomy 27:10a NIV
Explain to the children that we shouldn't let anything come between us and our love for God.
BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)
Gather the children around you in a circle for story time. After the introduction, read the story about the Ten Commandments right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand.
Introduction:
It had been three months to the day since the Israelites left Egypt. Now, they were at the bottom of a mountain called Sinai. The Israelites decided to camp there in the desert in right in front of the mountain. One day, God called down to Moses from the mountain, so Moses went up to God. As God spoke, He gave Moses ten very special rules, called the Ten Commandments. He told Moses to give the ten commandments to the people below. Raise your hand if you would like to know what these rules were all about. (Many Children's Bibles contain the story of the Ten Commandment, and may be easier for young children to understand.)
Read Exodus 20:1-17 (The Ten Commandments)
Discussion Questions:
1. What is a commandment? (A law or rule given to us by God.)
2. Should we follow the ten commandments today? (Yes.)
3. How many commandments did God give Moses to bring to the people? (Ten.)
4. How can the ten commandments help us live better lives? (The first four commandments are rules to help us live for God, the other commandments are rules to help us get along with other people.)
5. Do any of these ten commandments seem difficult to follow? Which ones? (Allow for discussion.)
6. Why is it important to follow God's rules, called the Ten Commandments? (God created us and knows what is best for us. God's rules will help keep us safe, healthy and happy.)
FUN TIME (10 minutes)
ALTERNATE FUN TIME (10 minutes)
PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Thank God for providing for all of our needs and for giving us rules to keep us safe, healthly and happy. As children enjoy snack time, talk about why rules are important.
CLOSING ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes)
As the children wait to be picked up, have them draw a picture of two stone tablets, like the ones given to Moses. Then, have them write the numbers 1 through 10 on the tablets. As an option, play another action-packed game of "Red Light/Green Light."
