KING SAUL

LESSON 1: A King on Demand

This lesson will help the children understand that God is our King. He made us special and He provides for us. Therefore, we should enjoy what we have and never be jealous of others. by Kristy Thornton

TOPICS

Believing, Jealousy, Saul, Sharing, Self-worth, Special

AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes)

Just Me (part 1)

Have paper and crayons (or colored pencils) available when the children arrive. Let the children draw pictures of themselves with their names placed at the top of the page. As the kids draw their pictures, discuss with them how God has made each of us special, and how we are all very different inside-and-out. Once the students finish, have them take turns describing what they believe makes them special.

Hang the pictures up in the classroom, spacing them around the room at the children's eye level. This will prepare you for part 2, the closing activity.

BIBLE VERSE (7 minutes)

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:33 NIV

Discuss looking to God first to get everything we really need. Practice saying this verse a couple of times as a class. Then, split the class up into two teams, and have a shouting competition.

For the competition, first divide the scripture in half. Give the first half to team "A" and the second half to team "B." The object is to repeat the verse several times, each time saying it louder. Have the students start by whispering their parts back and forth across the room. The students on team "A" will point to team B" and say, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness!” Team "B" will point back and say, “and all these things will be given to you as well.” Cheer on both teams to get louder and louder each time.

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the story right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand.

Introduction:Write the word "covet" on the board. Discuss with the children the meaning of covet. Covet is when you desire or crave something others have. A person can covet other people’s clothes, cars, houses, family, food, etc. Does someone you know have something that you really want for yourself? That may be coveting. We know that coveting is not good, because God tells us in the Ten Commandments not to covet. Being jealous and upset because someone has something that you don't is another form of coveting. God wants us to be happy with what He gives us, not angry because we want something someone else has.

We are going to read a story in the Bible about how the Israelites began to covet. God had plans for the Israelites to be holy and unique from all the other people. The Israelites didn’t see themselves as unique or special. They continued to compare themselves to others and become jealous. Let’s read right from the Bible to find out why they were jealous.

Read 1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22 (Israel Asks for a King)

Discussion Questions:

1. What were the Israelites asking for that all the other nations have? (A king.)

2. Who were they expecting to help them with this task? (Samuel.)

3. Was God happy with their demand? (No.)

4. Why did they want someone for this job besides God? (Because all the other nations had one. They were jealous.)

5. Did God give into their demands? (Yes.)

6. Do you think their lives will be easier or harder once they received the answer to their demands? Why? (Harder. Allow for answers.)

7. Who should be our king? (God.)

Begin snack time with prayer, thanking God for how He made each person so unique and special. Invite Him to be King over your life. Have trail mix with water and discuss how each treat in the trial mix has a look, taste, color, and job to keep us energized and healthy.

CLOSING ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes)

Just Me (continuation part 2)

Ask the students what new word they learned today that describes wanting or craving what others have. (Answer: Covet.) We should bethankful and love the way God made us.

Hand each student a highlighter. Demonstrate how the students will go up to their friends’ pictures and highlight what they like about that picture or person. It can be their shoes, eyes, hair, ears, etc. If they cannot make out what the pictures is, let them just highlight what colors they like best on their friends’ pictures. Give each child his or her picture to take home.
