BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)
Introduction:It’s time for our Bible story! Today we are going to continue talking about some of the people that were part of the Christmas story. The Christmas story is all about the birth of Jesus Christ and it is one of the most important stories in the Bible! When we read from the book of Matthew, he tells us details about some Religious leaders and how they were part of the story of Jesus’ birth. King Herod of Jerusalem wanted to know where Jesus, the Messiah, was supposed to be born so he called for these religious leaders. The religious leaders studied scripture daily and knew exactly where God’s Word said that the Messiah would be born. Let’s listen to the story unfold.
Read Matthew 2:1-8. Ask the children to listen for details about the religious leaders and what they said to Herod.
Discussion Questions:
1. What upset King Herod about the arrival of the Magi and the new star in the sky? (The new star was in honor of a new ruler.)
2. Why do you think a new ruler being born might upset the king? (He could be replaced! Herod wanted to be the only king.)
3. Who did Herod send for to help answer the Magi’s question? (The people’s chief priests and teachers of the law.)
4. According to these religious leaders where was the Messiah to be born? (In Bethlehem.)
5. Where were Herod and the religious leaders living? (Jerusalem.)
6. Did Herod or the religious teachers go to see Jesus after they found out where he was? (No, they did not.)

Have regular pretzels as snack and allow children to decorate them with red icing if time allows. Discuss how these are shaped as a heart to remind us we need to love Jesus with our hearts!
