STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN

LESSON 3: HEARING JESUS

WORSHIP TIME (5 minutes)

BIBLE VERSE (7 minutes)

"Everyone who belongs to God hears what God says." John 8:47 NIRV

Repeat the verse several times with the class. Then, arrange the children into a large circle. Start with one child, and have him or her whisper the verse into the person's ear to his or her right. Then, that child will whisper what he or she heard into the next person's ear, as in the popular telephone game. The last child must say the verse aloud. Then pick someone else to start and go around the circle again. Do this a few times or until everyone can say the verse correctly.

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the story about the shepherd and the sheep right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand..

Introduction:We are ending our series with Listening. We learned to stop and wait for Jesus’ return. We learned to look and watch for signs of His return while remaining faithful to Him. Now, we will learn to listen when God calls us. Our story today is about hearing the voice of our Lord, and how to recognize His voice.

John 10:7-10, 27-30 (The Shepherd and His Sheep)

Discussion Questions:

1. Who are the sheep? (We are the sheep as well as others who believe in Him.)

2. Who takes care of the sheep? (Jesus.)

3. Whom do the sheep listen to and follow? (Jesus’ voice.)

4. What does the thief try to do? (Kill, steal, and destroy us.)

5. Why should we follow Jesus when we hear His voice? (He will protect us, keep us safe, and lead us to Salvation.)

6. Can someone take us, the sheep, out from Jesus’ hand or from God’s hand? (No.)

7. How do you think sheep know their shepherds voice? (Allow students to answer.)

8. How do you think we can hear Jesus’ voice? (Allow students to answer.)

The sheep know their shepherd’s voice because the shepherd spends time with them, guides them, and keeps them safe. If a stranger were to try to gather the same sheep, they would not go with him because they do not recognize his voice. The same thing is true with Jesus. The more time you spend reading the Bible, praying, and worshiping Jesus, the easier it will be to recognize His voice when He talks to you. You will be able to tell the difference between Jesus’ voice and the enemy’s voice.

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Have miniature marshmallows for snacks. Start by thanking the Lord for providing good things to eat, and for keeping us safe in His hands. Give the children a handful of marshmallows, but ask them to wait to eat any until you say so. Then, tell them that you are going to try to snatch some marshmallows from their hands and they must try to protect them. Try to snatch some from a few children and see how they react. Some may not resist, but others may clench their fists together or turn away to keep their marshmallows safe. Explain that when we are in God's hands, He protects us in the same way as the children who protected their marshmallows. Finally, have the children enjoy their treats.
