THE APOSTLE PAUL LESSON 3: SINGING IN JAIL

In this lesson, Paul continues to tell others that Jesus is wonderful. However, some people don't like what he is doing and lock him and his friend Silas in jail. Children discover that even during hard times, they can still sing and have joy in their hearts because of Jesus.

TOPICS Apostles, Paul, Joy, Praise, Worship

AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes) Paper Chains (Craft) Part 1 Provide plenty of pre-cut strips of different colored paper. The strips should be about 1 inch wide and eight inches long. As the children arrive, have them create their own colorful chain. Start by bending one strip into a circle and glue the ends together. Then, loop the next strip through the first and glue the ends to form another link to the chain. Continue in this fashion to make as long of a chain as time allows. After everyone arrives, help the kids link their completed sections together to make one long chain, and display it in the classroom. At some point, count the number of total links. You will use this number later during the closing activities. While working on the chain, ask the children to mention different ways one can use a chain. For example, a necklace, to attach a swing, to tow a car, etc. If the children do not bring it up, be sure to mention that you can also use a chain to keep someone from getting away, like in jail. Let them know that our Bible story today is about two people who loved Jesus, but were locked up in jail with chains around their feet.

WORSHIP TIME (5 minutes) Further info? Click here BIBLE VERSE (8 minutes) I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Psalm 104:33 NIV Use either the first part of this verse only or the entire verse depending on the age and ability of your class. Have the kids repeat the verse and reference several times but each time using a different voice. For example, they can repeat the verse using the voice of a baby, a robot, a gorilla, a monster, or a chipmunk. They will have fun creating the different voices while learning the verse at the same time. BIBLE STORY (15 minutes) Gather the children around you for story time. After the introduction, read the children's version of the story below. As an option, you can read the story about Paul and Silas in prison directly from the Bible. Introduction: Does anyone remember what happened to Paul in our last lesson? Yes, he was in danger of being killed, so his friends helped him escape the city by lowering him in a basket over the wall. Now, Paul is in the city of Philippi where he is met up with a girl cursed by an evil spirit. Paul helps the girl, but somehow still ends up in jail. Let's read our story for today and find out what happened. Joy and Singing in Jail (Story) Click here (Option) Read Acts 16:16-34 Discussion Questions: 1. Why were Paul and Silas thrown into Jail? (The owners of the slave girl were mad at them for ruining their business.) 2. Why did the jailer take Paul and Silas deep inside the prison? (So they would not escape.) 3. What did the jailer put around the feet of Paul and Silas? (Chains or leg irons, also called stocks.) 4. What did Paul and Silas do while they were in jail? (They sang songs and praised God.) 5. What shook the prison and caused the jail doors to open? (An earthquake.) 6. Did the prisoners escape? (No.) 7. Why did Paul and Silas go to the jailer's house? (To share the word of the Lord with him and his household.) 8. Why were Paul and Silas able to sing and give praise to God even when they were in jail? (They knew God loved them and Jesus was Lord of their life.)

FUN TIME (10 minutes) Rumble, Crumble (Game) Click here

ALTERNATE FUN TIME (15 minutes) Joyful Jail Treat (Craft) Click here

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes) Further info? Click here If you used the craft idea, leftover crackers or pretzels can make a great snack. Otherwise any treat will do. Be sure to thank God first for providing all of the wonderful tasty things we have to eat. Have the kids think about other children who may be less fortunate and may even have to skip a meal because there is no food available. Is it possible for children in those conditions to be thankful and sing to the Lord? Why? What other times can you think of when it would be difficult to sing and give praise to God?

CLOSING ACTIVITIES (5-10 minutes) What Belongs? (Activity) Click here This activity will help the children remember the Bible story. Read the top of the activity page to the children and explain what they need to do. The musical notes (representing singing), the girl with the money, the leg iron, and jail cell belong. The football, dog, and whale do not belong. Paper Chains (Craft) Part 2 Take the chain down from display and cut the chain into equal sections by dividing the total number of links by the number of children in the class plus one. For example, if the total number of links is 102 and you have 10 kids, divide 102 by 11 and each child will get a short chain consisting of 9 links with some left over. (102/11=9.3) As the children leave, give them a section of chain as a reminder of today's lesson.

NEXT WEEK Next week our friend Paul is aboard a ship sailing for Rome. You must come back next week to find out if he made it there safely.
