THE APOSTLE PAUL LESSON 1: PAUL BECOMES A SPECIAL DISCIPLE

In this lesson, the children will learn about a very special disciple named Paul, who, in the beginning, treated Christians very badly. However, through a timely miracle, hearing the truth, and by faith, he became a strong servant of Jesus.

WORSHIP TIME (5 minutes) Further info? Click here

BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes) "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice." Philippians 4:4 KJV To help the children learn this joyful verse, sign with them the following familiar song. Rejoice in the Lord always And again I say rejoice. (clap clap) Rejoice in the Lord always And again I say rejoice. (clap clap) Rejoice, rejoice, And again I say rejoice, (clap clap) Rejoice, rejoice, And again I say rejoice. (clap clap) (Repeat a second time stomping feet.) (Repeat a third time jumping up and down while clapping.)

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes) Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the two stories about Paul right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand. Introduction: Our Bible story today is about a man who was really mean to people like you and me who believed in Jesus. This man was so mean, he went out chasing them and killing them. This made God very sad. "I know what to do," God said. He decided to have Jesus talk with the man, who was, at that time, known as Saul. Read Acts 9:1-9 (Jesus speaks with Saul) Discussion Questions: 1. What was the name of the person in the story? (Saul.) 2. Whose voice did Saul hear when he fell on the ground? (Jesus.) 3. Did the people around Saul see who was talking to him? (No.) 4. Why couldn't Saul see anything when he got up? (He became blind.) Jesus knew that if he talked to Saul, he would change his ways and become friends with other Christians. Most of all, he knew that Saul would become His special apostle. But first, Saul needed to know more about Jesus, from a man named Ananias. Read Acts 9:10-22 (Saul meets Ananias) Discussion Questions: 1. Did Jesus ask Ananias to help Saul see again? (Yes.) 2. What fell off Saul's eyes when Ananias placed his hands on him? (Scales.) 3. Did Saul see again? (Yes.) 4. Was Saul baptized after he could see again? (Yes.) 5. Did Saul continue to be mean to other Christians, or did he become a disciple of Jesus? (He became a disciple of Jesus.) As soon as Saul regained his sight, he believed in Jesus and began to preach and teach the truth about Jesus. Some people who remembered what Saul did before he met Jesus on the road didn't believe him at first. But Saul continued day and night to preach the Good News. Eventually, people started to listen and many became Christians. Saul was different now. He became a very special disciple of Jesus, and later he became known as Paul.

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes) Further info? Click here Ask the children to close their eyes for a while and imagine while praying that Jesus is sitting right there in the room with them. Start by praying to God and thanking Him for how He makes all things new. In the winter He brings the pure white snow to cover the brown land, making it fresh and beautiful. After a long winter He brings the springtime, and everything starts to bloom. God also makes us new in Him, when we choose to follow Jesus like Saul. Then thank Him for the treats and rejoice.

CLOSING ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes) As the children are waiting to be picked up, continue singing the song, "Rejoice in the Lord Always." (See Bible Verse section.)

NEXT WEEK Come back next week to find out what happened next after Paul started to follow Jesus.
