PREPARATION:
Before class, print and cut out the Samuel and Saul finger-puppets. Find a medium sized box and cut out the front and back. Then, decorate the box to create a finger puppet stage.
During the skit, have the children make sheep and cow sounds whenever they hear the words sheep or cattle. You can practice this before the skit begins.
After the skit, give each child his or her own finger-puppet coloring page. You can have the children color the finger-puppets during class, or have them wait to do it at home. Let the children know that when they get home, they can perform their own little finger-puppet show for their parents to tell them about the adventures of King Saul.
(Both Saul and Samuel come together in scene.)
Saul: Hi Samuel! May God bless you! I have done everything God asked me to do. I destroyed it all.
Samuel: God wanted you to destroy all of the people and all of the animals belonging to the Amalekites. Why do I hear sheep and cattle?
Saul: Well, I saved the best sheep and cattle for God. But I promise that I destroyed everything else. Everything!
Samuel: Stop! Stop! God didn't ask you to save anything for Him. He just wanted you to obey His instructions. Did you think you could hide what you did from God?
Saul: But I did obey the Lord. I destroyed all (pause) well...except I did bring back Agag, the king of the Amalekites. He is still alive too.
(Samuel shakes and groans in disbelief.)
Samuel: You have lied to me and to God. You saved the best sheep and cattle when you should have destroyed them. And, you saved their king when you should have destroyed him. You did not listen and follow God's instructions.
Saul: Please forgive me, and all my sin. Come with me so we can worship God together.
Samuel: I will not go with you. You did not trust God. You rejected Him by disobeying and telling a lie, now God will reject you as king over His people.
(Saul leaves crying and upset.)
Samuel: And the Bible says, "The Lord was sad because He made Saul king of Israel." (1 Samuel 15:35a)
