RUMBLE, CRUMBLE
Children pretend a giant earthquake rumbles and crumbles the jail where Paul and Silas are held as prisoners.
TOPICS: Apostles, Paul, Power of God, Protection
MATERIALS: CD of Christian children's songs CD player DURATION: Approximately 10 minutes
WHAT YOU WILL DO: Select two children to be the first Paul and Silas, and have them sit in the middle of the room. Have the rest of the class make a large circle around Paul and Silas and join hands.
Start the music. While the music plays, everyone in the circle walks clockwise around Paul and Silas while holding hands. Then after 10 or 15 seconds, stop the music. As soon as the music stops, all the children yell out the following chant:
EARTHQUAKE, EARTHQUAKE, RUMBLE, RUMBLE! EARTHQUAKE, EARTHQUAKE, CRUMBLE, CRUMBLE!
At the end of the chant, all the children in the circle must let go of each other's hands and fall to the ground.
Next, Paul and Silas get up, exit the jail and run at least one time around the outside of the circle. Then, they touch the shoulder of one other child, and trade places. The two children selected become the next Paul and Silas, and the game starts again. Play until everyone gets a chance to be Paul and Silas.
WHAT YOU WILL SAY: There is a story in the Bible about two men, Paul and Silas, who were put in jail although they did not do anything wrong. They knew God loved them and would keep them safe. While in jail, they prayed and sang songs to God. At midnight, a great earthquake shook the foundations of the jail. The ground rumbled, the walls crumbled, and all the doors flew open, but Paul and Silas did not try to escape. Instead, God kept them safe. (Acts 16:16-34)
Let’s play a game to remind us how we can always give praise to God no matter where we are, and how we can trust God to keep us safe.
In this game, the music represents how Paul and Silas continued to praise God while they were in jail by singing hymns. At midnight, represented by stopping the CD, a big earthquake shook the foundations of the jail. The children falling down and letting go of hands represent how all the doors opened because of the earthquake.
