有一个名叫以利加拿的人，他有两个妻子。一个叫哈拿，另一个叫毗尼拿。毗尼拿有儿子有女儿，但哈拿什么也没有。

哈拿因为渴望拥有孩子但不能生育而深受困扰。更糟糕的是，有很多孩子的毗尼拿经常取笑哈拿不能生育。

哈拿的丈夫以利加拿非常爱哈拿，努力安慰她。但哈拿渴望拥有一个孩子，她无法得到安慰。

就如每年的习俗，他们又去示罗敬拜神，并向全能的神献祭。哈拿的内心深受困扰，因为她渴望拥有一个孩子，而毗尼拿却一直取笑她。哈拿在殿里苦苦祈祷，痛哭流涕。在祈祷期间，她向神许下一个承诺，如果赐给她一个男孩，她会将孩子奉献给神。

一位名叫以利的祭司看到了哈拿祈祷的情景。哈拿在心里祷告，嘴唇在动，但他听不见她的声音。哈拿祈祷得很虔诚，以致于祭司以利以为她醉了！

THE BIRTH OF SAMUEL

Hannah prayed for a child for many years. When the time was right, God answered her prayer.1 Samuel 1:1-20 (Paraphrased)

There was a man named Elkanah who had two wives. One was named Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had sons and daughters, but Hannah had none.

Hannah was deeply troubled because she wanted to have a baby, but could not. To make matters worse, Peninnah, who had many children, would continually make fun of Hannah’s inability to have children.

Hannah’s husband, Elkanah, loved Hannah very much and tried to comfort her, but

Hannah’s longing to have a baby was great. She was not easily comforted.

As was their custom each year, Elkanah and his family went to the town of Shiloh to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty. Hannah’s heart was troubled because she desperately wanted to have a baby and Peninnah had been making fun of her. Hannah was crying bitterly and praying to the Lord just outside of the temple. During her prayer, she made a promise to the Lord, that if He would give her a baby boy, she would give him back to the Lord.

A priest named Eli observed Hannah as she prayed. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but he could not hear her voice. Hannah was praying so hard that Eli the priest thought that she was drunk!

"I am not drunk, but deeply troubled," Hannah said.

Eli replied,“Go in peace and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him.”

Eli’s blessing encouraged Hannah, so she went on her way. The Lord remembered Hannah and in the course of time she conceived and gave birth to a son. Hannah was very happy. She named the boy Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”
