JOYFUL JAIL TREAT
A fun food craft to show how Paul and Silas gave praise to God even while in jail.

MATERIALS: Pictures of Paul and Silas [PDF] Click here Pretzel sticks Graham crackers Icing or peanut butter plastic knives, scissors
DURATION: Approximately 15 minutes Click here for larger example
PREPARATION: Before class, print out enough pictures of Paul and Silas so each child can have one. You also need two crackers and about 10 pretzel sticks for each child. Have extras available in case of breakage.
WHAT YOU WILL DO: Spread peanut butter or cake icing over one graham cracker, and place another cracker on top. You can also use only one cracker; however, using two prevents breakage. Spread more peanut butter or icing over the top cracker, and then press a picture of Paul and Silas into the middle. Next, press pretzel sticks over the top to create jail like bars over the picture. (See example.) Have the children take their food craft home to eat later, and for a reminder that they can have joy and sing to the Lord in all situations, just like Paul and Silas did while they were in jail. Remind the children also to remove the picture of Paul and Silas before eating.
WHAT YOU WILL SAY: In our Bible story, two men, Paul and Silas, were put in jail, although they didn't do anything wrong. However, they knew God would protect them. To show their joy, Paul and Silas sang songs to the Lord late into the night. This "Joyful Jail Treat" will remind us that we can have joy and sing to the Lord in all situations, just like Paul and Silas did while in they were in jail.
