HOP TO IT

A fun variation of hopscotch game for children to help them memorize their Bible verse and get out some wiggles. by Lauren Shelnutt

MATERIALS:

Nine sheets of colored construction paper

Masking tape, black marker

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

PREPARATION:

1. Gather your stack of construction paper into a stack and order the colors to make a rainbow. Make sure there are no two sheets of the same color back to back in the stack.

2. As neatly and big as you can make it, write the first two or three words of the Bible verse in black marker on the first sheet. Repeat this until all the words from the Bible verse are written on eight sheets of construction paper.

3. Take the remaining sheet of construction paper and write the book of the Bible, chapter, and verse for the memory verse.

4. Use the masking tape to make an arrow on the floor of your classroom pointing towards the hopscotch grid.

5. At the point of the arrow, tape the piece of construction paper with first words of the verse to the floor. Tape the entire edge of the page to make sure it will stay put.

6. Tape the next two pieces of construction paper, in verse order, side by side above the first.

7. Tape the next piece of construction paper, in verse order, above the last two in the verse.

8. Continue this 1-2-1-2-1 hopscotch pattern until the verse is complete.

9. Double check taping to make sure that the pages are secure on the edges.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

Today we are going to play an awesome game of hopscotch to help us learn our Bible verse. We will start the game by forming a single-file line at the starting arrow of our Bible verse. If there is one block of paper you must jump and land on one foot, it there are two pieces of paper in a row you must jump and land on two feet---one on each sheet of paper. As soon as your feet land on the ground, say the words you are stepping on. When you get to the end of the verse turn and go back to the end of the line. Do no begin your turn until the person in front of you is finished. I will go first, to show you how it’s done.
