What I Want to Be
Children try to guess what another child wants to be when he or she grows up.
TOPICS:Blessings, Child of God, Growth, Self-Worth MATERIALS:Job cards A and B [PDF] Click here DURATION:Approximately 15 minutes |
|
PREPARATION:
Before class, print out one set of the job cards, and cut out each card. Place all the job cards face down on a table before starting the game.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Children will act out what they want to be when they grow up. They will do this as in playing charades. First, arrange the children so they can all see the front of the class. Then, choose one child to be the first one to come to the front of the classroom and act out his or her selected job.
If your children are old enough to know what they would like to be when they grow up, they can use that as their desired job, or you can have them take a job card from the table.
Once they have selected their job, offer some suggestions as to what they can do in front of the other children. If a child selects the firefighter card, he or she can pretend to climb a ladder and squirt a hose to put out a fire. If a child wants to be a farmer, he or she can pretend to feed the chickens or milk a cow.
Have each child start by saying, "When I'm grown up, what will I be? Take a look you will see!"Then have them act out the job using your suggestions. The first child to guess correctly becomes the next one to select a job. Allow enough time so everyone has a turn, but do not force anyone to participate, if he or she is uncomfortable.
If the children are having a hard time guessing the job, have a helper describe what the child is doing. For example, if the child's job to act out is a firefighter, she can pretend to be putting out a fire. The helper can say something like, "now she is pointing a hose at a burning house."
WHAT YOU WILL SAY:
From our little game, we can see that there are many different kinds of jobs. There are many different things we can do when we grow up. Some jobs help many people, like firefighters or farmers. Some jobs are very admired, like movie stars, or kings and queens. Some make people feel better, like doctors and nurses. However, no matter what our job is, we should do it as if we are working for the Lord. We honor Jesus when we do our job with thanksgiving and joy, knowing that our job is a special blessing from God.
