How David Honors God
The story of how David honors God after cutting off a piece of Saul's robe in a cave. (1 Samuel 18: 5-8; 24:1-20)
TOPICS:David, Honor God, Pleasing God, Respect, Saul DURATION:Approximately 10 minutesThe guard ran into the king’s chambers, with a sad look on his face. “Oh blessed king, do you hear the women outside? Listen to them!” he said. King Saul went to the window and couldn’t believe his ears. The women were dancing and singing, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” |
It was true. David was much more successful in battle, and the king didn’t like it one bit. David was making him look like a weak fool. As the days went on, Saul became more and more jealous. He thought David might even try to take over his kingdom. Now he was angry. Finally, evil overcame Saul, and he decided to put an end to it by killing David.
Many times Saul came very close to capturing David, but every time David somehow managed to escape. You see, the Lord was with him and kept him safe. Although Saul was the king of Israel at this time, God promised that David would also someday be king.
Now one day, Saul heard that David was in the Desert of En Gedi. So he took 3,000 of his best men and went to hunt for him. But David was already deep inside a nearby cave, hiding for his life. Moments later, Saul went into the same cave, but it was very dark inside and he didn’t even know David was there.
David was afraid, but here was his chance to put an end to his fear by killing Saul first. Quietly he crept up in the dark shadows of the cave. Slowly, he grabbed his knife. He raised it up, but he couldn’t do it. He couldn't kill King Saul. Instead, he cut off a piece of the king’s robe. Saul left the cave completely unaware of what David had done.
David felt bad about what he did. Saul was still the king, chosen by God. David knew that he should respect and honor him as king. By doing so, he would also be honoring God. He found his way out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!”
Saul suddenly looked around, and saw David there, bowing down to him.
David looked up and said, “Why do you believe that I want to do you harm? Look here, is a piece of your robe that I removed when you were in the cave. I could have easily taken your life, but I will not lift my hand against the lord’s anointed. I have never harmed you, yet you hunt me down like an animal.”
Then Saul asked, “Is that you David, my son?” Tears filled his eyes, and he said, “You are more righteous than I. You treated me well, while I treated you badly. You spared my life, although I wanted to take yours. Now I know that one day you will surely be king.”
