WORKING TOGETHER RACE
Children will race against the clock in a three-legged race learning the importance of working together. by Lauren Shelnutt TOPICS: Knowledge, Teamwork MATERIALS: Construction paper Marker, scissors Hat, bandana Stopwatch, chairs Masking tape Candy DURATION: Approximately 15 minutes
PREPARATION: 1. Cut out a small sign from construction paper and write the word: “HEAD” in large letters and tape it to front of the hat. 2. Cut out a heart shape and write “HEART” in large letters and tape it to the front of the shirt of the child chosen to be the heart. 3. Setup chairs, tables, or other large pieces of furniture creating an obstacle course that the kids must work through (level of difficulty should be age-appropriate). 4. Use masking tape to make a starting/finish line and looping path around the room. WHAT YOU WILL DO: Choose one child to be the “head” and place the hat on their head. Chose one child to be the “heart” and tape the heart to their shirt. Have the kids stand side by side and tie their two ankles together with a bandana (creating a three-legged race). It may be helpful and add a level of stability if children place their arms over the shoulders of their teammate. Demonstrate the path the players must take around the obstacles. If teammates separate or skip an obstacle they must go back and complete the obstacle together. The timer will begin as soon as you say, “Go” and will stop with both teammates cross the finish line. Use the white board to keep track of each pair’s time. Repeat the activity choosing two different children until every child has had a turn. The two kids with the fastest time are the winners! Give the two winners a candy prize. (Sit as a class to talk about the game.) Then, pass out candy to the other kids also.
WHAT YOU WILL SAY: Wow, that game was a lot of fun. I could tell it was very tricky for some of the teams to complete the obstacle course. It would have been faster if you were separated. But, it is so important to make your heart and your head, work as a team in life and in your faith. We must take the time to make sure the things we learn change the way we feel and act. It is easier to just keep them apart but I hope this game is a fun reminder that even though it can be tricky—working together is always best! And you know what? Because all of you made the choice to work together even though it was hard, I think you are all winners of this game. Here’s some candy for all of you!
