Airplane Prayers

A fun team building activity that helps teach children to pray for others.

PREPARATION:

Before class print out a copy of the map for each child.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Gather the children together and ask them if they would like to build their very own airplane! Arrange a couple of tables as if they were wings, and arrange the chairs to be the seats in the airplane. Use other assorted toys to be the pilot's controls, the engine and a radio. Use your imagination to come up with other sections of the airplane.Next, tell the children that you need quite a few volunteers to help you fly the airplane. You will need a pilot, a co-pilot, a mechanic for the engine, and a person to work the radio. Tell them that they will all have to work together to make it a successful flight. Act surprised and tell them that you forgot one of the most important jobs, that of being the navigator.

Pull out the "Airplane Prayers Map" and ask the children where they would like to go. Use a sticker or a marker to mark the destination on the map and then hand the map to the navigator. (Please note that you can easily substitute other maps to narrow the flight to specific areas within your country.) Have the children take their places, children without jobs can be the passengers. Have the mechanic check the engines before taking off. Have the radio operator give the clearance for takeoff, and have the pilots take off. As they pretend to fly, have the navigator track their location.

You can pretend to fly to Biblical lands, missionary fields, the capital of your state or country, or other areas where there are people for whom the children can pray. Once playtime is over, ask the kids what types of prayer the people of the area you pretended to visit may need. Take several minutes to allow for children's comments and then lead the children in prayer time. Let each child take a copy of a map home to remind them to pray for others around the world.

This activity will introduce children to geography and sharpen their awareness of the world around them.
