Oil and Water

A fun experiment to introduce children to one of the properties of oil while helping them gain an understanding of how oil was used during biblical times.by Lauren Shelnutt

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Once all of the students have arrived, display the bottle of vegetable oil and tell them to come in close because you have a fun experiment to show them. Make a big presentation out of each step of the process to engage the children.

Take the bottle of oil and pour half a cup into the measuring cup. Then slowly pour the oil into the empty water bottle using the funnel. Say, "This is oil that I’m pouring into this bottle. The baker in your home may use this to bake yummy treats such as brownies or cake, but back in biblical times oil, was very important. People needed if for light, cooking, and even used it for medicine."

Next, take the full water bottle and pour half a cup into the measuring cup. Then, add a few drops of food coloring to the water you measured out. Use the funnel and slowly pour the dyed water into the water bottle containing the oil.Say, "This is water, and I am making it blue, so you will remember that it is water. Watch what happens when I add this blue water to our oil. Oil is very different than water, and it is special."

Carefully, screw the lid on the water bottle until it is sealed. Say, "Watch what happens when I shake the bottle up! [Shake it hard] The water stays separate from the oil even when I shake it. It does this because oil is very special and different from ordinary liquids you might drink like water. It’s used for a lot of things."

Allow each student to take a turn shaking the bottle, while examining what happens inside the bottle.
