DON'T FORGET TO LISTEN

Children have fun while learning the importance of listening for Jesus. By Kristy Thornton

TOPICS:

Guidance, Listening, Patience

MATERIALS:

Small toy cars and trucksLarge table

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

PREPARATION:

Before class, gather enough small toy cars and trucks so you will have one for each child. The vehicles need to be able to roll freely.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Children will attempt to roll a small vehicle into a pretend grocery store parking lot, while observing patience and driving safety rules. Give the children each a vehicle and have them stand on one side of a large table. You will stand on the other side and use your hands to form a "V" to be the parking lot.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

Each of you has a motor vehicle of some sort. Now, what sound do you think your vehicle makes? Let's all start our engines to hear the sound. (Allow time for children to make engine noises.) Great! Now, let’s turn them off.

You are going to pretend to dive your vehicle across the street to the grocery store parking lot. (Place your hands out in the shape of a “V” on the top of the table.) The goal is to roll your vehicle into my hands, which is the parking lot.

Before we begin, what are safety tips when you cross the street? (Stop, look, and listen to see if cars are coming.) You must stop, look, and listen to make sure no one else is trying to roll his or her vehicle and get in your way. We do not want any accidents.

Listening is an important rule. Just because you cannot see something, that doesn’t mean it is not there. You need to be patient and listen to make sure no other vehicles will get in your way.

When you are ready to roll your vehicle, make your engine noise with your mouth. This will let others know your vehicle is on and that you are ready to go. Then, when you feel it is safe to roll your vehicle into my hands, give it a push. Some of you can go at the same time, but you may also want to be patient and wait until it is safe. So, let's start.

(Wait for everyone to have a chance to roll his or her vehicle. Do about three rounds. There may be many, few, or no crashes, which is fine.) Good job everyone. Let’s all park our cars and turn off our engines. Now, let's see a show of hands:

Who was able to get his or her vehicle to the grocery store parking lot without any crashes?

Who only crashed once?

Who only crashed two times?

From this activity, we learned that listening is a very important rule to follow for safe driving. It is also important to listen for Jesus. When we listen to His voice, He will guide us and keep us safe too.
