Looking Through God's Eyes
Kids have fun making their own pair of colorful binoculars to remind them that God is full of love and justice. -by Kristy Thornton
TOPICS:Fairness, Justice, Knowing God, Love MATERIALS:Paper Towel tubes*Lens cutouts for each pair of binoculars [PDF] Click hereScripture slips [PDF] Click hereMedium card stock (optional) Assorted colored tissue paperYarn, glue, clear tapeHole punch, stapler DURATION:Approximately 20 minutes |
PREPARATION:
Before class, obtain two 4 to 6 inch tubes for each child. Print copies of the lens cutouts, preferably on medium card stock. You need one heart lens and one mallet lens for each pair of binoculars. Also, print and cut out the scripture slips. As an option, you can retype the scripture and print out using an address label sheet.
Cut up squares of colored tissue paper. Also, precut long strips of yarn to use as a strap to go around each child's neck to hold the binoculars. Fasten the lenses to the tubes using strong tape. Remember that each child needs two tubes, one with a heart lens and one with a mallet lens.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Give each child one tube with a heart lens and one with a mallet lens. Have the children glue colored tissue paper to both tubes. Encourage the children to be careful not to damage the lenses while working. When finished, carefully staple the tubes together to create a binocular shape. Punch a hole in the outer side of each tube. Then, thread opposite ends of the yarn through each hole and tie. You can also wrap clear tape around both tubes near the ends to help keep them together.
Finally, have the children glue their scripture slip to the side of their binoculars.
WHAT YOU WILL SAY:
God knows all and sees everything. He is watching you and me all the time. He sees all the good we do and all the bad. The Bible says that God is love, but He is also just. This means that He is fair. God watches us with love, but if we do something wrong, He makes sure that we know what we did was wrong so we don’t do it again.
Today, you are going to make a set of binoculars so we can pretend to look through the eyes of our Lord, Jesus. We will see that Jesus has eyes of love, represented by the heart. He also has eyes for justice and fairness, represented by the mallet that judges use in court to determine if someone is right or wrong.
*You can use paper towel tubes cut in half, wrapping paper tubes cut into 4 to 6 inch sections, or toilet paper tubes by themselves. Tubes should be about 1 and 3/4 inches in diameter. You need two 4 to 6 inch long tubes for each child.
