If the Shoe Fits

Children will learn that having self-worth is better than being jealous. By Kristy Thornton

TOPICS:

Jealousy, Provision, Self-worth, Special

MATERIALS:

Band-aids, 3 pairs of shoes (One pair tiny, one pair really big, and one pair that fits just right on the teacher's feet.)

DURATION:

Approximately 10 minutes

PREPARATION:

Before class, make sure that you have 3 pairs of shoes in drastically different sizes. Choose an area in your classroom where you can walk around without obstructions for this illustration.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

You will place all three pairs of shoes on a table in plain view and pretend to go shopping for shoes. You will try on all three pairs and walk around. While doing so, you will point out the foolishness of trying to wear shoes that do not fit your feet just because someone else has a pair like it. Instead, we need to wear the shoes that fit the feet God gave us.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:

I need to go shopping for a new pair of shoes. Look, here are some shoes. But which ones should I get. (Pick up the shoes that are too small.) Oh, look at these adorable shoes! All my friends have these. I must have them too. (Put the small shoes on and walk around uncomfortably.) Ouch! My toes hurt so much. These shoes are too small. (Remove the shoes and place Band-Aids on your toes.)

(Pick up the shoes that are too large.) I am so sad I can’t buy the same shoes my friends have, but look at these shoes! Everyone in my family has a pair of these shoes. These can’t hurt as badly as the last pair. (Put the large pair of shoes on and walk around uncomfortably.) Ouch! Now I'm getting blisters on the tops of my feet. These shoes are too big. (Remove the shoes and place Band-Aids on the tops of your feet.)

(Pick up the shoes that fit you just right.) I can’t believe that those shoes didn't fit me either. Now I can’t be like everyone else. I guess I will just have to try these shoes on and hope they fit. (Remove the Band-aids and put on the last pair of shoes that fit just right.) Wow! These feel great! I think I need to stick with my own style and wear shoes that fit the feet God gave me. I should not be jealous of what others have.

Just like I wanted to wear shoes that I know are popular with others—I wanted to be like my friends and family; similarly, the Israelites wanted to be like everyone around them. They were jealous of all the other nations who had a king. God wanted them to choose Him as their king, but they refused to be unique and demanded, “We want an earthly king!” They went before Samuel to ask him to find them a king. If they would have only looked to God and been content with God as their king, they wouldn’t have gone through so many sufferings. Just like I did when I tried to wear the wrong shoes and ended up needing Band-Aids. God wants us to be happy with what He gives us. He wants to provide for us in special ways, even with shoes. If the shoe doesn't fit, don't wear it. If the shoe does fit, wear it knowing it is a blessing from God.
