BIBLE VERSE (7 minutes)
"Love and truth keep a king safe." Proverbs 20:28 NIRV
Discuss with the children why love and truth are good things to have. These two things will keep us safe no matter who we are. God’s eyes were on Saul. He was watching him to see if he would be full of love and faithfulness.
Discussion Questions:
1. Jesus is our King. What are some ways we can show love to Him?
2. What does it mean to be truthful to Jesus?
BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)
Gather the children around you for story time. After the introduction, read the Children's version of the story. As an option, you can read the story Saul directly from the Bible.
Introduction:We learned that God chose the Israelites to be His people, but they did not choose God to be their king. They wanted a king immediately, so God had Samuel anoint Saul to be king. God gave King Saul a specific mission to destroy all of the animals and people of the Amalekites. Let’s look at the rest of the story to see how well Saul performed his kingly duties.
Saul Disobeys God (Skit) Click here
(Option) Read 1 Samuel 15:13-36 (Saul is rejected as king)
Discussions Questions:
1. How did Saul disobey the Lord? (He didn’t destroy all of the animals or all of the people.)
2. Whose lives did Saul spare? (Agag, the King of the Amalekites and some of the best sheep and cattle.)
3. Why was Samuel angry with Saul? (Saul did not do exactly what God asked him to do. Then, he lied about it instead of telling the truth.)
4. How did God know that Saul didn’t do exactly what He wanted? (Because God knows all and sees all. We cannot hide our sins or lies from God.)
5. Was God sad because of Saul’s actions? (Yes, he was grieved that He made Saul king.)
6. Think again about our memory verse. “Love and truth keep a king safe." Would you say that Saul was safe or unsafe as king? Why? (Not safe because he did not obey God and he did not tell the truth. If he loved God and feared Him, Saul would have destroyed all the animals and every one of the Amalekites like God asked him to do.)
7. How do you think Jesus feels when we show Him love and when we tell Him the truth? (Allow for answers.)
8. Besides Jesus our King, who else desires our love and truth? (Allow for answers.)
