PUTTING JESUS FIRST

LESSON 4: With Our Lives

In this lesson, children learn how to put Jesus first in a more general way; with their lives. Putting Jesus first in everything is very pleasing to God.

TOPICS

Behavior, Choices, Following Jesus, Godliness, Pleasing God

AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes)

Putting Jesus First (Bulletin Board/Coloring Activity) Click here

As the children arrive, give them the fourth picture pair found in the bulletin board/coloring activity (Putting Jesus First with our Life).

If you are not using the actual bulletin board idea, the children can still color the pictures, and you can post them on the wall. Each picture pair will help the children see what it looks like when someone is putting Jesus first, and what it looks like when someone is not putting Jesus first. Optional pre-colored pictures are also available.

WORSHIP TIME (5 minutes)

BIBLE VERSE (7 minutes)

“Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." Colossians 3:12b NIV

This verse reminds children that when we put Jesus first in our lives, we are then able to show the characters that He wants us to have.

Explain to the children what compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience look like in a person of God.

Then, if appropriate for the age of your class, ask for 5 volunteers to stand in a line. Give each child one of the characteristics (words) to say when it is her or his turn. Start by saying "Clothe yourselves with..." then have the first child shout out, "Compassion!" The next child should follow immediately with, “Kindness!” Have the kids follow suit until all five words have been shouted. See how fast they can complete the memory verse in this way.

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, first read Psalm 103:8-12 from the Bible. Then, read the children's story, Showing God's Love, which is about a little girl who discovered that to truly love someone, she must learn how to put Jesus first in her life. After ready the story, go to the discussion questions.

Introduction:

The best way to find out what it means to put Jesus first in our lives, is by reading about Jesus, and how He cares so much for us. Let's read one short passage from the book of Psalms. As we read, listen to all of the ways our Lord shows kindness and love for us. In the same way, we can show the same for others.

Read Psalm 103:8-12

(Repeated below from the New International Reader's Version.)

"The Lord is tender and kind.

He is gracious.

He is slow to get angry.

He is full of love.

He won't keep bringing charges against us.

He won't stay angry with us forever.

He doesn't punish us for our sins as much

as we should be punished.

He doesn't pay us back

in keeping with the evil things we've done.

His love for those who have respect for him

is as high as the heavens are above the earth.

He has removed our lawless acts from us

as far as the east is from the west."

Psalm 103:8-12

Discussion Questions:

1. What did Margaret’s mother notice about her friend Sarah? (She was a very loving girl.)

2. What did Sarah do to make Margaret feel loved? (She held her hand as they walked to school. They read books together and they talked about God.)

3. In spite of having a handicap, did Sarah make fun of Margaret? (No.)

4. What does Sarah show us with her actions? (She shows us how to love and help her friends when she is able.)

5. Did Sarah show compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience? (Yes.)

6. Would you like to have a friend like Sarah? (Yes.)

7. Did Sarah show love to Margaret because she was told to, or because she knew God would want her to do so? (She knew God wanted her to show love.)

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Further info? Click here

Have ready a sweet treat of fruit snacks with filling, similar to Gushers®. As the children eat them, they will bite into the filling and it might catch them off guard. Remind them that the filling is very similar to our life. Our words, our actions, and our thoughts come from inside us. But unlike the fruit snacks, sometimes what comes out of us doesn't taste very good. When we say, do, or think mean things, it may catch others off guard causing distress or even hurt feelings. When we put Jesus first, our lives will be full of five good things. Do you remember the five words we learned earlier? compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience
