PUTTING JESUS FIRST

TOPICS

AS KIDS ARRIVE (10 minutes)

Putting Jesus First (Bulletin Board/Coloring Activity) Click here

As the children arrive, give them the second picture pair found in the bulletin board/coloring activity (Putting Jesus First with our Actions).

If you are not using the actual bulletin board idea, the children can still color the pictures, and you can post them on the wall. Each picture pair will help the children see what it looks like when someone is putting Jesus first, and what it looks like when someone is not putting Jesus first. Optional pre-colored pictures are also available.

BIBLE VERSE (5 minutes)

"Serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you." 1 Samuel 12:24 NIV

Giving God our best is what He wants from us. He has given us many chances to serve Him in special ways and we need to remember why we want to serve and give Him our best. God has done so much for us and sometimes, the only way to thank Him is by giving it back to Him.

Have the children repeat the first part of this verse several times throughout the lesson. Whenever you hold up a red paper heart and ask, "what should you do for the Lord?" The children will answer, "Serve Him faithfully with all your heart."

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After the introduction, read the story about the anointing of Jesus right from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand.

Introduction:What we do is as important as what we say. Last week we discovered how to put Jesus first with our words. This week, we see how to put Jesus first with our actions. What should you do for the Lord? (Serve Him faithfully with all your heart.)

Our Bible story today is about a woman who was not living a very good life until she met Jesus. Now, she is living for Jesus and putting Him first. She wanted to do something very special to express her love and appreciation for the new person she became. Let us read the story right from the Bible this time, to find out what it was she did.

Luke 7:36-38, 44-48 (Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman)

Discussion Questions:

1. Who invited Jesus to have dinner with him? (A Pharisee.)

2. What did the woman bring with her to the dinner? (An alabaster jar of perfume.)

3. What did she use the wet the feet of Jesus? (Her tears.)

4. What did the woman use to dry the feet of Jesus? (Her hair.)

5. What else did the woman do to the feet of Jesus? (She kissed them and poured perfume on them.)

6. Why was the Pharisee upset that the woman was touching Jesus? (Because she was a sinner.)

7. Do you believe the woman was truly thankful for Jesus and putting Him first with her actions? (Yes.)

8. How can our actions show that we love Jesus a lot? How can we act like the woman in this story? (Allow for discussion.)

Start by praying to God and thanking Him for caring for us each day. While enjoying a snack, talk about how we can put Jesus first with our actions, by doing nice things for others, and by serving the Lord. What are some examples of things we can do to serve Jesus? Brainstorm with the children. For example: dry the dishes, help mom clean the house, put away toys when asked, etc.

God Says... (Game) Click here

Play this lively game again while waiting for the children to be picked up.

NEXT WEEK

Now we can put Jesus first with our words and our actions, but there is more. Come back next week to learn about a secret place in our life where we need to put Jesus first.
