BIBLE VERSE (7 minutes)

"I will praise the Lord all my life." Psalm 146:2a NIV

Talk about the different ways we can praise the Lord. Some examples may be dancing, singing, playing music, bowing down, jumping up and down, and shouting. Have the children share which ways they like best. Then have them repeat the verse several more times while doing some of these things.

BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Gather the children around you in preparation for story time. After each introduction, read the below passages directly from the Bible. If possible, use a Children's Bible so it will be easier for the kids to understand.

Introduction (Part 1):

When David was a young boy, he was a shepherd. It was his job to take care of the sheep belonging to his family. One day, the prophet Samuel came to David's house. He anointed David to become a king someday for all of Israel, but not right away. Saul was still the king at this time. It was not yet time for David to take over the job of king. Meanwhile, King Saul let David work for him by fighting battles and playing the harp. During this time, King Saul did not obey God in many ways. God was not pleased with Saul, and did not want him as King anymore. Now, it is time for David to take over as King. Let's read about what happed from the Bible.

Read 2 Samuel 5:1-5 (David Becomes King)

Discussion Questions:

1. Did all of the tribes of Israel come to David or just some of them? (All of them.)

2. Instead of sheep, what would David shepherd and rule over as the new king? (People.)

3. How old was David when he became king of Israel? (30 years old.)

4. What do you imagine the celebration was like when the people crowned David as their new King? (Allow for answers.)

Introduction (Part 2):

Shortly after David became King, he set out to bring a precious treasure back to the City of David, known also as Jerusalem. It was the ark of God, and covered in gold. Inside were some treasures, like the stones containing the Ten Commandments and some of the manna God's people ate while wondering in the desert. Bringing the ark of God back to the City of David made King David very happy. Let's read about what happened as David entered the city with the ark of God.(Before reading the story, let the children know that an ephod is a sleeveless, pullover garment made of fine linen. You may also want to refer to the coloring page used earlier as an example.)

Read 2 Samuel 6:12-19 (David Dances for Joy)

Discussion Questions:

1. What happened after the people carrying the ark of God took six steps? (David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf)

2. What did King David do with all his might? (Danced before the Lord.)

3. What was King David wearing? (An ephod.)

4. What else could be heard as the ark of God arrived into the city? (Shouts and trumpets.)

5. What did the daughter of Saul see David doing before the Lord? (Leaping and dancing.)

6. How would you describe how David felt as he brought back the ark of God? (Full of joy and excitement.)

7. David enjoyed his job as King and was full of joy and excitement. Can we be full of joy and excitement no matter kind of job we have? Why? (Yes, because the Lord is with us.)

PRAYER/SNACK (10 minutes)

Give each child a small bag of potato chips, nuts, or other packaged snack. Remind them that there are many things they can do when they grow up. They may be business men and women, scientist, farmers, politicians, firefighters, and the list goes on. Have the children name as many jobs as they can think of while eating their snacks. Explain that no matter what job we have when we grow up, we can praise the Lord with all our might. We are part of God's Kingdom, and Jesus is the King of Kings.
